Apple Updates Multiple App Store Apps Without Explaining Why

Apple appears to have quietly pushed App Store updates to a wide range of third-party apps, and the strange part is that nobody seems to know exactly why these updates happened or what they changed.

Users started noticing fresh update notes on both old and recently updated apps, and the message looked the same across the board: “This update from Apple will improve the functionality of this app. No new features are included.”

The update note has shown up on apps such as Candy Crush Soda Saga, VLC, Mortal Kombat, Duet Display, Catan Universe, Bluetti, and Sentry Mobile, which has led many users to ask whether Apple has started stepping into the update process more directly.

At the moment, the answer still looks unclear, because the affected apps do not seem to share one obvious pattern, and reports suggest the code itself has not meaningfully changed.

Developers and users are just as confused

On Reddit, developer iSan4eZ said, “Apple inserted this text into my app and issued an update with the same version,” which immediately made the situation more interesting because it suggested the change did not come from the developer side.

In a follow-up comment, the same developer added, “They did ONE MORE update of the app, but this time removed their text from my patch notes,” which made the whole thing look even more unusual.

Another Reddit user, lazyvardev, wrote, “It’s rare but sometimes Apple will modify the binary for compatibility purposes,” while ex0rius pointed to an older example and said, “This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.”

That history matters here, because Apple has stepped in before, even if it usually does so for compatibility rather than new app features. Right now, these “updated by Apple” notes look like a quiet backend or compatibility move, and until Apple explains it, that is where the story stands.

  • It would be nice if Apple updated some off the apps from Intel to what ever the Mac uses in Tahoe that are in the App Store.
