Tech Giants Meet To Build A Universal 50W Wireless Charging Standard

The next big jump in wireless power is finally taking shape behind closed doors. Representatives from Apple and other major tech brands recently gathered in Beijing for a four-day meeting hosted by Xiaomi. The group met to discuss the upcoming 50W Qi wireless charging standard. This new update aims to bring much faster and safer power to your favorite devices without locking you into a single brand.

The new standard aims to fix messy brand restrictions

Right now, you can find phones that charge at 50W or higher. The catch is that these fast speeds only work with specific chargers made by the same company. If you buy a special charging pad for a specific Android device, it might barely charge a phone from a different brand.

The Wireless Power Consortium wants to change this. With over 20 companies in attendance, the recent talks focused on creating a universal solution. The goal is to make sure devices from any brand can work together perfectly. Xiaomi is even pushing its own low-voltage setup to help keep phones cool and thin while they charge.

A common charger could arrive for all phones by 2028

The group hopes to finalize this new 50W specification sometime in 2028. Making this happen requires cooperation from industry rivals like Google and others who normally compete for your money. The consortium spent the four-day event testing hardware prototypes and figuring out the technical details needed to make cross-brand compatibility a reality.

When this technology finally launches, it will make buying accessories much easier. You will be able to buy one fast charger and use it for an iPhone or any other supported device. A single standard removes the guesswork from shopping and keeps unnecessary chargers out of the trash.
