Tap a suggested reply above the keyboard in Mail on iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence writes a full draft “in your personalized writing style,” according to Apple’s iPhone User Guide. If you’d rather it didn’t imitate you, turn off Personalize Smart Replies at Settings > Apps > Mail.
Apple lists “Personalized Smart Reply in Mail” among the features the next generation of Apple Intelligence brings with iOS 27, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple’s iOS 26 guide described Smart Reply only as a way to “suggest a reply to an email you receive,” with no mention of your style and no personalization switch.
How to draft a reply with Smart Reply
- Go to the Mail app on your iPhone.
- Tap an email, tap the Reply button, then tap Reply.
- In the keyboard, tap a suggested reply.
- Apple Intelligence drafts a reply in the email. Edit it yourself, or refine it with Writing Tools.
- When you’re ready to send your reply, tap the Send button.
The draft sits in the message body until you tap Send, so read it the way you’d read an email a colleague wrote for you. Check names, dates, and anything you’d be agreeing to.

Apple doesn’t explain how Mail learns your writing style. What it does document is a single switch that turns the personal touch on or off.
How to turn off personalized Smart Replies
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then tap Mail.
- Turn off Personalize Smart Replies.
Two neighboring switches on the same Mail screen are easy to confuse with it. Summarize Message Previews controls the Apple Intelligence summaries in your inbox. Follow Up Suggestions controls whether an email you sent jumps back to the top of your inbox when nobody has replied after several days.
Which iPhones and languages work
Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 runs on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, which includes iPhone 18 Pro. Older iPhones that run iOS 27 don’t get Smart Reply drafts, and Apple says usage limits may apply to Apple Intelligence features.
Apple’s feature availability page lists Mail Smart Reply in all 16 Apple Intelligence languages: English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. Chinese (Simplified) isn’t available in China mainland. Your device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language.
Smart Reply isn’t Siri AI, the beta assistant that can write a message from scratch, so you don’t need Siri AI switched on to use it. Apple says the next generation of Apple Intelligence features across apps is available to users based in the EU with iOS 27, even though Siri AI isn’t initially offered there on iPhone.
Messages gets a personalized version in English
Smart Reply also works in Messages. Apple’s guide puts it simply: “Just tap a suggested reply above the keyboard.” The personalized version there is English only, according to Apple’s Apple Intelligence support document, while the Mail version covers the full language list.
