Apple has introduced its eighth-generation iPad mini, bringing one of the biggest upgrades to its compact tablet lineup in years. The new model features an 8.5-inch OLED display, A20 Pro chip, thinner design, improved cameras, faster connectivity, and water resistance, making it a substantial upgrade over the 2024 iPad mini with A17 Pro.
The new iPad mini starts at $699, which is $100 more than its predecessor’s most recent $599 starting price. Pre-orders open on October 28, 2026, with availability beginning November 6.
Following Apple’s official announcement of the new iPad mini, here’s a detailed comparison of everything that has changed and whether upgrading makes sense.

1. Larger OLED Display With Higher Brightness
The biggest visible change is the move from an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD to a larger 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. Apple has reduced the bezels by 24%, allowing the screen to grow while maintaining approximately the same overall footprint.
OLED technology gives the new iPad mini individual pixel-level lighting control, producing deeper blacks and better contrast when watching movies, editing photos, or reading in dark environments.
The display improvements include:
- 1,200 nits peak HDR brightness, compared with 500 nits on the previous model.
- 600 nits full-screen brightness, improving outdoor visibility.
- 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio for deeper blacks.
- 1-nit minimum brightness for comfortable nighttime use.
- Optional nano-texture glass on 256GB and 512GB models to reduce glare.
However, the new iPad mini still uses a 60Hz refresh rate, meaning it lacks the smoother 120Hz ProMotion experience available on the iPad Pro. Earlier reports about the OLED iPad mini’s refresh rate had suggested this limitation.
2. A20 Pro Delivers a Major Performance Upgrade
Apple has replaced the A17 Pro with the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a newer 2nm process. The processor brings significant improvements to demanding applications, graphics performance, and on-device artificial intelligence.
According to Apple’s published performance figures, the new processor delivers:
- Up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance.
- Up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance.
- Up to 4.5 times faster AI performance.
- More than twice the unified memory bandwidth.
Interestingly, processor configurations also vary by storage. The 128GB and 256GB models have a five-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. The 512GB version gets a six-core CPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
These improvements should benefit demanding games, video editing, 3D rendering, and applications running AI models locally.
3. Thinner Design and Water Resistance
The new iPad mini measures just 5.4mm thick, compared with 6.3mm on the A17 Pro model. Apple has also reduced its weight by approximately 15%, making the tablet easier to carry and hold for extended periods.
Another major addition is IP67-rated water and dust resistance, which the previous generation lacked. Apple rates the new model for immersion in up to one meter of freshwater for 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions.
The tablet also introduces a redesigned Acoustic Display audio system, using specially designed woofers and hidden tweeters to deliver stronger bass and clearer sound while helping maintain the sealed enclosure.
Apple now offers midnight and starlight finishes, replacing the previous generation’s blue, purple, space gray, and starlight options.
4. Improved Cameras and Faster Charging
Apple has moved the 12MP Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge, making video calls more natural when the tablet sits horizontally. The previous model positioned its front camera along the shorter edge.
The rear camera remains a 12MP Wide sensor with support for 4K video recording at up to 60fps. However, the new model adds an Adaptive True Tone flash, improving document scanning and photography in challenging lighting conditions.
Charging has improved as well. Apple says the new iPad mini can reach 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes with a compatible 35W or higher USB-C adapter.
Despite the thinner design, Apple continues to advertise up to 10 hours of battery life for general Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback.
5. Wi-Fi 7, Apple C2 Modem, and New AI Features
Connectivity receives substantial improvements through Apple’s N1 wireless chip, which brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.
Cellular configurations also feature Apple’s newer C2 modem, delivering up to 50% faster cellular data speeds than the previous generation, according to Apple.
The new iPad mini ships with iPadOS 27 and supports Apple’s latest intelligence features, including the next generation of Siri AI. Apple says its new on-device processing capabilities improve systemwide dictation, image editing, and AI-assisted tasks.
The tablet will also support extended display mode with iPadOS 27.2, allowing users to work with resizable app windows on an external display.
Both generations support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple has also introduced a new TechWoven Smart Folio with additional viewing angles.
6. Price and Availability
The new iPad mini starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular in the United States, representing an increase over the previous generation.
In India, pricing starts at ₹82,900 for Wi-Fi and ₹1,00,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular.
Apple will begin accepting orders on October 28, with deliveries and in-store availability starting November 6. Buyers can check the iPad mini pre-order guide for availability and ordering details.
Should You Upgrade to the New iPad Mini?
The 2026 iPad mini is a meaningful upgrade, particularly for anyone using an older sixth-generation model or considering their first compact iPad.
Its OLED display, A20 Pro processor, water resistance, landscape camera, and faster connectivity make it considerably more capable than the outgoing model.
However, existing A17 Pro iPad mini owners who mainly browse, read, stream videos, and take notes can continue using their current devices comfortably. Both models support Apple Intelligence and Apple Pencil Pro, while battery life remains broadly similar.
For buyers who prioritize display quality, gaming performance, and portability, the new iPad mini offers enough improvements to justify serious consideration, although the higher price makes the purchasing decision more important.
