TrendForce, in a press release dated September 10, expects Apple to ship about 5 million iPhone Duo units in 2026. Analyst Jeff Pu, in a research note reported by 9to5Mac on September 15, expects 6 million, itself a cut from the 7 million he had been carrying. Two named houses, one product, a million units apart.
Apple has published no shipment or production figure for the iPhone Duo, and it has not reported iPhone unit sales for years. What it has confirmed is narrower and firmer: pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16, the foldable becomes available on October 23, and it starts at $1,999 in the US.
The two numbers, and what sits behind them

TrendForce’s figure comes with context the other does not publish. It puts the whole foldable smartphone market at roughly 20.2 million units in 2026, up 0.5 percent year on year, and gives Apple a 24.8 percent share of it in its first year, second only to Samsung at about 7.1 million units and 35.1 percent. Strip Apple out and the picture inverts: TrendForce reckons the Android foldable makers would be down more than 20 percent year on year between them. That is the more interesting claim buried inside the headline number. A company with no foldable yet on sale takes a quarter of the category on entry, and it is the only reason the category grows at all.

Pu’s note is not public, and the estimate reached the press secondhand. The same note puts iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at 72 million units by year end, and Pu ties the Duo revision to hinge supply. That reading is his own. No manufacturer has confirmed it, and Apple has said nothing about supply either way.
Why first-generation forecasts scatter
A spread this wide looks like someone must be wrong. It is closer to normal. Forecasters building a number for a product that has never existed have no sales history to anchor to, so they work backwards from component orders, assembly-line bookings and supplier conversations, each of which is a partial view of a chain Apple deliberately splits between vendors.
They are also not always counting the same thing. Units assembled in a quarter, units shipped to the channel, and units sold to people are three different figures, and a 2026 calendar-year forecast for a product that goes on sale October 23 covers barely ten weeks. Move the assumed weekly run rate slightly, or shift one week of production from December into January, and a million units appears or vanishes without anybody having been wrong about the factory.
Then there is the revision habit. Pu’s 6 million is his second number this cycle, not his first, and forecasts get updated as often as the supply chain changes its mind. The figure you read is a snapshot with a date on it, which is why the date matters as much as the number.
What Apple has actually said
Keep this side clean, because it is the part you can plan around. From Apple’s own announcement: iPhone Duo comes in star white and night sky, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, starting at $1,999 in the US, or $83.29 per month for 24 months. Customers in more than 70 countries and regions can pre-order from 5 a.m. PT on October 16, with availability beginning October 23. A further 28 countries and regions follow on October 30.
Nothing in either forecast moves any of those dates, and neither house claims otherwise.
Where these numbers stop being useful
They do not tell you whether you will get one. An annual unit forecast says nothing about how many phones are in the pre-order pool on the first morning, how they are split between countries, or which storage tier and color run short first. Five million and six million are both large numbers, and both are consistent with a comfortable pre-order or a frustrating one.
They say nothing about whether the product is good, either. First-year volume for a category-opening device is a manufacturing story, not a verdict on the device.
The honest summary is that two credible houses, reading the same supply chain weeks before the phone goes on sale, landed a million units apart, and that Apple has offered no figure to settle it.
