Spoilers for Dark Matter Season 2, Episode 4 follow. Daniela leaves Jason because Charlie moving out exposes how little normal life the couple has recovered. Their home is quieter, but neither can stop living inside the damage caused by the alternate-world crisis, and the distance between them finally becomes impossible to ignore.
Episode 4 does not frame Daniela’s departure as one argument or one new betrayal. It is the outcome of accumulated fear, exhaustion and the realization that Jason is increasingly absorbed by the entanglement problem while she is trying to understand who she is in a world that no longer feels stable.

Charlie’s move removes the family’s last routine
Charlie decides not to relocate again and begins building a life with Eduardo, the son of this universe’s Amanda. The decision makes sense for a teenager who has had enough of sudden disruption, but it changes the temperature inside Jason and Daniela’s home.

With Charlie gone, the parents no longer have the practical routines that let them avoid their own problems. The space he leaves behind does not create peace. It forces them to confront how much their relationship has been held together by crisis management rather than genuine recovery.
Daniela and Jason retreat into separate fears
Daniela turns to long runs and begins thinking about her father’s old store, wondering whether he might still be alive in this version of reality. Jason responds differently, fixating on entanglement equations and trying to work out how to disentangle this Box from the others.
Neither response is frivolous. Daniela is searching for an anchor, while Jason is trying to solve the danger that has defined their lives. But they do not share those experiences with each other, and the episode makes their silence more consequential than any single visible fight.
Their separation is painful precisely because both impulses are understandable. Jason’s work may feel urgent, and Daniela’s desire for something recognizably hers may feel necessary. Episode 4 shows that shared trauma does not automatically produce a shared way of living with it.
Leaving is Daniela’s refusal to pretend
Daniela’s decision to leave acknowledges that the version of normal they are performing is not working. The episode does not give her a clean exit strategy or suggest the world outside is safe. It simply shows that staying in a relationship shaped by constant suspicion and unspoken grief has become its own risk.
The ending therefore makes the science-fiction premise emotionally immediate.
