The arrest confirms those instincts. The guards do not treat the pair as people who have simply come home late. They frame the alleged offense as a public-safety violation, which immediately raises the possibility that this version of their world has been reshaped by a crisis the characters did not know to anticipate.
Quarantine makes the wrong-world problem immediate
The charge of breaking quarantine and curfew gives the ending a concrete threat. In a show about alternate realities, the most unsettling difference is not always a spectacular one. A changed set of rules can make a street, a home or an ordinary decision suddenly unsafe.
It also puts Ryan and Amanda in a position where knowledge of the Box may not help them. They have traveled between worlds, but that does not give them an explanation for the emergency they have walked into or a quick way to persuade armed authorities that their story is real.
The ending separates survival from belonging
Ryan and Amanda have spent the season looking for a route toward ordinary life. Episode 4 undercuts that hope by making their destination feel unfamiliar at exactly the moment it should offer relief. Their quiet decision to cooperate keeps the scene from becoming a reckless escape, but it does not answer what will happen once the guards take them away.
That is the episode’s real twist: getting back is not the same as getting home.
