The streaming service Apple TV just hit a major milestone, recording its highest weekly viewership in its history. During the week of September 14, the platform saw a 67% jump in total views compared to the same time last year. This sudden and massive spike was largely driven by its impressive haul of 29 Emmy awards and a fresh slate of hit movie and show premieres.
Fresh premieres quickly pushed viewer numbers to new heights
The recent release of the Cold War buddy comedy movie Mayday gave the platform a massive push. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, the film became its biggest movie debut to date over its first 18 days. It opened at the number one spot on Luminate’s weekly rankings with 8.7 million views.
At the same time, the surprise return of Ted Lasso for a fourth season kept audiences hooked. The beloved sports comedy pulled in 734 million viewed minutes in a single week. It is now the most-viewed returning comedy season for the service over its first 54 days.

Recent award wins triggered a massive spike in streaming activity
Award wins translated directly into more eyes on the screen for Apple. Its hit original series Widow’s Bay took home 14 Emmy awards, and its viewership skyrocketed by 280% in the week following the ceremony. Pluribus won six awards and enjoyed a 200% surge in streams.
Other fan favorites felt the bump too, with the sixth season of Slow Horses seeing a 25% jump in ratings. These massive numbers prove the company knows how to make shows people actually want to watch. With returning hits and huge award sweeps, its library is pulling in audiences faster than ever before.
