HomePod mini 2 got the announcement on October 13, but Apple’s product pages show that the $349 HomePod (2nd generation) shares two of its new features: Sound Glow and support for use as a Mac speaker. Both appear in Apple’s own copy and fine print for the full-size HomePod.

Here is what each feature does, what you need, and what Apple has and has not committed to. Our HomePod mini 2 story covers the new speaker itself.
Sound Glow on HomePod (2nd generation)
The HomePod (2nd generation) page describes the feature in its music section: “And with Sound Glow, the top of your HomePod lights up with colors that match your album artwork, pulsing in tune with the music.”

Apple’s HomePod mini 2 press release goes into more detail on how Sound Glow works on the smaller speaker:
- It turns the top of the speaker into “a visual canvas that glows and pulses in sync with the music, reacting in real time to bass and treble.”
- “The song’s album artwork from Now Playing generates a color-matched light experience that’s unique to every song.”
- Users “can pick a soundscape like rain to trigger bespoke animations for a soothing atmosphere.”
The HomePod (2nd generation) page mentions the album artwork colors and the pulsing, but not the soundscape animations, so the soundscape part is confirmed only for HomePod mini 2 for now.

What voice control of Sound Glow needs
Both product pages carry the same footnote, and it matches footnote 5 in the HomePod mini 2 press release: “Voice control for Sound Glow requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running the latest software.”
That is a real requirement for many households. For Siri AI, Apple’s support document lists the Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones on iOS 27 as iPhone 15 Pro models and later, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air. Apple attaches the iPhone requirement to voice control of Sound Glow, not to the feature itself.
HomePod as a Mac speaker
Apple’s new Mac speaker feature is not limited to HomePod mini 2. The HomePod mini page footnote says: “Compatible with HomePod mini 2 and HomePod (2nd generation) with support on all Mac desktops and laptops with Wi-Fi 6E or later.”
The press release footnote adds that the feature “works with either a single HomePod or a stereo pair.” Apple’s pitch on the HomePod mini page is that the speaker delivers room-filling sound for watching movies, playing games and video calls on a Mac, and that “the connection is more responsive and reliable than ever.”
What you need:
- A HomePod (2nd generation), or two for a stereo pair.
- A Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later. M1 Macs and the M2 MacBook Air have Wi-Fi 6 and are not covered. Our Wi-Fi 6E Mac list has the full breakdown.
A stereo pair has to match. Apple says pairing “requires two of the same model and generation of HomePod speakers, such as two HomePod mini 2 or two HomePod (2nd generation),” so you cannot pair a HomePod with a HomePod mini 2 on your desk.
Surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K
The full-size HomePod also counts toward Apple’s new four-speaker home theater setup. Apple’s footnote says: “Home theater surround sound requires four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers in matching pairs (front and rear) and paired with Apple TV 4K (4th generation) running the latest operating system software.”
The HomePod page reads: “Pair two speakers for stereo sound, and now four speakers for an immersive surround sound experience.” Our surround setup guide covers the costs.

When it arrives
Apple’s pages describe both features for HomePod (2nd generation) but do not give a date or software version for existing speakers. The only version Apple names is for the new model: “HomePod mini 2 is compatible with HomePod software 27.2.” HomePod mini 2 is available from Friday, October 30, and the new Apple TV 4K needed for surround arrives on Friday, November 13.
If you own a HomePod (2nd generation), keep it on the latest HomePod software. Apple’s footnotes for both the Mac and surround features also call for the latest operating system software on the devices involved.
