Former Slough House agents are being killed because an organized pair of assassins is working through a list connected to Jackson Lamb’s unit. Episode 1 confirms the pattern through the murders of Struan Loy and Kay White, then shows River Cartwright selected as the next target. It does not yet reveal who ordered the campaign or the final motive.
The timing points toward more than personal revenge against one disgraced spy. Slough House has also been deliberately erased from MI5 systems, including payroll. Together, the digital purge and physical killings look like an attempt to remove both the people and the official record of the unit, although the premiere stops short of confirming one mastermind.

Struan and Kay establish the pattern
Struan’s murder is designed to pass as an accident. A man and woman pose as investors interested in his shipping-container housing idea, overpower him, lock him inside and start a fire. Their planning shows that they know his post-Service life and want time before investigators recognize a pattern.
Kay White’s death changes that reading. Once a second person with a Slough House connection is killed, Lamb’s suspicion becomes much harder to dismiss. The assassins’ move to River further proves that the danger is not limited to former staff or people who have vanished from active operations.
Slough House is also erased on paper
The erased records create cover for the attack. Roddy discovers that the unit and its staff have disappeared from the Park’s system, while an estate agent arrives to assess the building. Someone with high-level access appears to be dismantling Slough House administratively as the killers dismantle its human network.
Diana Taverner denies knowing why the deletion happened, and Episode 1 does not prove she ordered it. Her reluctance to involve Lamb in Struan’s death nevertheless leaves the team isolated precisely when access to MI5 resources could keep them alive.
The motive remains the season’s mystery
The two-book structure offers context without supplying a safe answer. Season 6 draws from Joe Country and Slough House, and its announced premise centers on retaliation and revenge. The television version can rearrange identities, causes and victims, so book knowledge should not be presented as a confirmed solution.
For now, the defensible answer is that membership in Slough House is the common factor and somebody wants the whole network erased.
