Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with a sixth-episode fifth season because the creative team rejected the alternative Paramount+ first raised: ending the series after Season 4 with a movie. Executive producer Akiva Goldsman has said two hours would not have given the story enough room.
The result is not an expansion of the final run. It is a compromise that gives Captain Pike’s crew a planned conclusion, albeit a shorter one than the show’s usual 10-episode season. Paramount+ confirmed in 2025 that Season 5 would be the final season.

Goldsman said Paramount wanted the show to finish with a movie after Season 4. The producers’ objection was practical as well as creative: a feature-length ending could not carry the same character work and multiple story strands as a final season.

The solution was six episodes. That is fewer than fans may want, but it gives the writers a serialized stretch in which to resolve Pike’s Enterprise story rather than compressing it into a single event film.
Paramount+ has already confirmed the final order
The official Paramount press announcement made the status clear in June 2025: the fifth season is the final one and contains six episodes. It was ordered before the Season 3 premiere, so the ending is not a last-minute response to an unresolved cliffhanger.
That advance notice matters for a prequel whose characters are headed toward established Star Trek history. A defined endpoint lets the final season choose what to resolve on its own terms and what to leave for the wider canon.
The shorter order still needs to earn its ending
Six episodes create a sharper constraint, not a smaller responsibility. The final season will need to balance Pike’s future, the ensemble’s relationships and the show’s episodic sense of discovery. Goldsman’s movie comment explains why the producers preferred six chapters over one, but the episodes will decide whether the trade-off pays off.
A season also preserves the shape that made Strange New Worlds distinctive. Individual episodes can test a character or genre while still contributing to a larger destination. A movie could concentrate the ending around one crisis; six chapters make more room for farewells to feel earned rather than simply efficient.
The shorter order remains a constraint, but it has a clear logic. The final run has less time than a traditional season and more space than the two-hour conclusion Paramount first suggested.
