Reinhart places Olive at the center of both the romance and the workplace story. The character begins fake dating to clear the path for Anh and Jeremy, but the arrangement forces her to confront gossip, academic pressure and the possibility that Adam’s care is not part of the performance.

Adam is the feared professor Olive kisses when she needs evidence for a lie. His severe reputation has earned him the nickname Dr. Evil, yet his reason for accepting the bargain is practical: Stanford is holding back research funds because administrators think he may leave.
Bateman plays the contrast between Adam’s blunt professional manner and his increasingly careful behavior around Olive. The performance has to make the audience see the relationship changing before either character is ready to say it aloud.

Jeremy’s connection to both women creates the misunderstanding that starts the plot, but he is not the romantic obstacle the setup first suggests. Tom is the more serious threat because his professional influence lets him pressure Olive while presenting himself as an ally.
Together, the ensemble makes the romance feel tied to a functioning community rather than an isolated bargain. Each friend exposes something Olive or Adam is trying not to say, while the faculty characters show why their private decisions can affect careers around them.
