What runs on the earbuds without help
Apple’s hardware table credits AirPods 5’s own H2 chip with Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and the custom Adaptive EQ, alongside Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Those are processed on the earbuds themselves and are not listed as needing a specific iPhone generation or software version beyond what already pairs with AirPods 5 at all.

What is tied to your other devices, not the earbuds
Apple’s software feature list states that Live Translation, hands-free Siri AI, Voice Isolation, Live Listen, Headphone Levels, Headphone Accommodations, Find My separation alerts and Listen Together all require an iPhone, iPad, Mac, an Apple Watch, Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro running the latest operating system. Live Translation carries an extra line beyond that: it specifically requires Apple Intelligence, which is not available on every device that otherwise runs the latest software. Apple’s AirPods 5 page does not name a minimum iPhone model on the AirPods page itself; that floor is set by whichever device you pair with, not by the earbuds.

The two features tied to which model you bought
Two items on the list are not about software at all. The volume swipe gesture on the stem and the case speaker that lets Find My play a sound both appear only on the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, according to Apple’s hardware spec table. The $129 standard model has a force sensor for play, pause and calls, and its case can still receive separation alerts, but it cannot play a sound to help you locate it and its force sensor is not listed with a swipe function. Neither depends on which iPhone or operating system you run.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not named a minimum iPhone, iPad or Mac model for any AirPods 5 feature directly on the AirPods page, deferring instead to whichever device you already pair. It has not stated whether Listen Together requires both AirPods sets to be the same model, or whether an AirPods 5 can share audio with an AirPods Pro 3 or an older AirPods 4. And it has not published which specific operating system version, beyond “the latest,” first enabled each feature. A more detailed footnote on the AirPods 5 page itself, matching the kind of device-by-device breakdown Apple sometimes publishes for Apple Intelligence, would settle each of these.
As of September 12, 2026, iOS 27 has not yet arrived; it lands free on Monday, September 14, four days before AirPods 5 itself reaches stores on Friday, September 18. Apple’s own recap of the September 9 announcement is still the clearest single summary of which features were introduced alongside which model.
