AirPods 5 costs $129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, and reaches stores Friday, September 18, 2026. But several of the features Apple highlighted for it, Custom EQ, Siri hands-free activation and Live Translation, also arrive free on AirPods you already own once iOS 27 installs Monday, September 14.
That leaves a narrower question than “should you upgrade”: which parts of AirPods 5 are software Apple is giving everyone, and which parts are hardware only the new earbuds have. The answer splits fairly cleanly.
What iOS 27 gives existing AirPods for free
| Feature | Arrives via iOS 27 on existing AirPods | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Custom EQ | Yes, no model restriction stated | Apple’s iOS 27 page |
| “Hey Siri” hands-free | Already present on the current lineup | Apple’s AirPods compare page |
| Live Translation | Yes, if the paired iPhone and AirPods firmware qualify | Apple’s AirPods specifications page |
| Siri AI (conversational assistant) | Depends on iPhone model, not AirPods model | Apple’s iOS 27 page |
What only AirPods 5 hardware adds
AirPods 5’s noise cancellation claim is a hardware story. Apple’s press release states the new multiport acoustic architecture removes “up to 50 percent more noise compared to AirPods 4 with ANC,” and Apple’s product page separately puts the same comparison at “up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation.” The two figures describe the same improvement in different units, but either way, it is a chip-and-microphone difference iOS 27 cannot deliver to older buds through a software update.

The rest of the hardware gap is similarly physical: an IP57 rating for dust, sweat and water, against IP54 on AirPods 4 with ANC; a lighter 4.3 gram bud; and, on the $149 model only, a force sensor with a volume swipe and a case that adds Qi and Apple Watch charging on top of USB-C. None of those depend on which iPhone is in your pocket, and none of them can be toggled on for an older model in Settings.
Apple’s compare page also lists the same Personalized Spatial Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation features across AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 3 alike, which is a reminder that a shared feature name on a spec sheet does not always mean a shared hardware capability underneath it.
Where the money actually goes
| What you are paying for | $129 AirPods 5 | $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case |
|---|---|---|
| Battery, ANC on / with case | 4 hours / 20 hours | 5 hours / 22 hours |
| Volume swipe on the stem | No | Yes |
| Case charging | USB-C only | USB-C, Qi and Apple Watch charger |
| Water resistance | IP57 | IP57 |
Where AirPods Pro 3 still stands apart
Neither AirPods 5 model adds heart rate sensing during workouts; Apple reserves that for AirPods Pro 3 specifically, tied to a sensor no other current AirPods has. Anyone drawn to AirPods 5 by the GymKit headlines in iOS 27 should know that particular feature is not part of what $129 or $149 buys.
Deciding without the marketing language
If what appealed to you about AirPods 5 was Custom EQ, hands-free Siri, or Live Translation, iOS 27 puts those on the AirPods already in your case on Monday, at no cost. If what appealed to you was a stronger noise cancellation claim, a higher water resistance rating, or the $149 model’s volume swipe and wireless case, those remain reasons to buy new hardware, not reasons to update software.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a side-by-side count of how much of AirPods 5’s noise cancellation gain is the new acoustic architecture versus updated computational audio that could theoretically run on older chips. It also has not stated whether Custom EQ or Live Translation will ever extend to AirPods models it no longer sells, such as the 2nd or 3rd generation.
iOS 27 installs free on Monday, September 14, 2026, on any iPhone from the 11 onward. Checking your current AirPods for Custom EQ that day, before deciding whether the September 18 hardware is worth it, costs nothing.
