DuckDuckGo Calls Out Google For Forcing AI Searches On Schools

Privacy focused search engine DuckDuckGo is speaking out against a controversial new policy from Google. The massive tech company recently told schools they have to accept artificial intelligence tools if they want students to keep using regular internet search features. This all or nothing approach is getting plenty of pushback, as it leaves educators with very few options to protect students in their classrooms.

Google ties its internet search engine and smart tools together

Under the recent updates for education accounts, schools face a tough choice when setting up their student profiles. Administrators must explicitly turn on the new Gemini features to keep standard search capabilities active for students. If a school district decides to block the smart chat tools to keep things simple, they lose access to the main search engine entirely.

Company representatives claim that standard search and AI are now deeply connected at a fundamental level. Because of this built in connection, they argue it is not possible to separate the two services for young users. However, critics quickly pointed out that the tech giant could easily hide the smart overviews just like they handle local maps, flights, or weather modules.

DuckDuckGo offers a simple alternative without the forced chat tools

Following this policy change, DuckDuckGo stepped up to offer a different path for concerned teachers and parents. The privacy company reminded the public that students do not need artificial intelligence just to look up basic facts online for their homework. They are actively encouraging schools to switch their default search provider to avoid the new restrictions and keep things straightforward.

Unlike its much larger rival, DuckDuckGo allows users to turn off its smart chat features at any time without a penalty. This gives school districts the power to keep classrooms focused on traditional learning without losing the ability to safely browse the web. It is a very simple fix for schools that want to stay in control of what students actually see on their screens.

Instead of giving schools a real choice, the current policy forces administrators into a corner where they must accept unwanted software. As technology keeps changing how students learn, privacy focused companies are eager to step in when the biggest players demand too much control over the everyday classroom experience. The coming months will show if schools actually push back and change their default search tools.
