AirPods 5 reach stores Friday, September 18, 2026, at $129 or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, and Apple’s own specifications page attaches a condition to several of the features on the box: the earbuds need current firmware, the paired device needs current software, and for some features Apple Intelligence needs to be switched on. Miss one piece and part of the feature list will not work yet.
None of this is hidden. It sits in Apple’s compatibility footnotes, which is exactly where buyers tend not to look on launch day.
What Friday actually requires beyond a credit card
| Detail | What Apple states |
|---|---|
| AirPods 5 availability | Pre-order now; in stores Friday, September 18, 2026 |
| Price | $129 standard, $149 with Wireless Charging Case |
| Software for full features | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro on the latest OS |
| Live Translation condition | Latest OS, plus AirPods on the latest firmware, plus Apple Intelligence turned on |
| Older software | Apple states AirPods still work as Bluetooth headphones, with limited functionality |
The fine print behind Live Translation
Apple’s specifications page states that Live Translation for AirPods 5 is “available on compatible Apple devices with the latest operating system software when paired with compatible AirPods with the latest firmware when Apple Intelligence is turned on.” That is three conditions in one sentence, and all three need to be true at once, not just one of them.

If your iPhone has not updated to iOS 27 yet
Apple’s own compatibility note covers this directly: “AirPods can be used as wireless Bluetooth headphones with Apple devices using earlier software and with non-Apple devices, but functionality may be limited.” In plain terms, a brand-new AirPods 5 will still play audio through an iPhone that has not installed iOS 27, but Apple does not commit to which of the newer controls, Custom EQ, Adaptive Audio tuning, Live Translation or Siri AI, will be available in that state.
Since iOS 27 installs free on Monday, September 14, 2026, four days before AirPods 5 reach stores, most buyers will already be updated by Friday. Anyone who delays the iPhone update should expect a plainer experience out of the box.
If your AirPods firmware has not updated yet
New AirPods ship with whatever firmware Apple loaded before they left the factory, and Apple has not published what that build number will be for AirPods 5. Firmware updates afterward happen automatically, but only once the earbuds are charging in Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi connected Apple device, and Apple says to allow at least 30 minutes. Opening the box, pairing once and immediately testing Live Translation in a low-signal area skips a step Apple’s own process assumes will happen first.
The battery figures worth getting right
| Model | Listening, ANC on | Total with case, ANC on |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 ($149, Wireless Charging Case) | Up to 5 hours | Up to 22 hours |
| AirPods 5 ($129, standard) | Up to 4 hours | Up to 20 hours |
Apple’s newsroom release leads with the 5-hour and 22-hour figures, which belong to the $149 model. The $129 model, on Apple’s own store and specifications pages, is rated at 4 hours per charge and 20 hours total. Both numbers are correct; they simply describe two different products at two different prices.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a firmware build number for AirPods 5 ahead of release, and has not stated how long a first-time firmware check takes compared with a routine one. It also has not said whether AirPods 5 will arrive already running the build that supports Live Translation, or whether every unit needs one automatic update first.
Buyers picking up AirPods 5 on Friday, September 18, 2026, can shorten the gap by installing iOS 27 on their iPhone before that day and by leaving the new earbuds charging near that iPhone, on Wi-Fi, for at least 30 minutes after the first pairing. Our AirPods 5 announcement coverage and iOS 27 release date guide cover the two halves of that requirement separately.
