Apple describes AirPods 5 as offering up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation than the previous generation. Its AirPods comparison page describes AirPods Pro 3 as offering up to 3x more than AirPods 5. Stack those and you get 4.5x of something Apple has never measured.
Every noise cancellation figure Apple publishes for AirPods is a multiplier against another pair of AirPods. There is no decibel value anywhere in the chain, which means the ladder has rungs but no ground floor.

AirPods 4 with ANC is the baseline for the AirPods 5 claim, and Apple attaches no figure of its own to it. The press release version of the AirPods 5 claim is the more precise one: up to 50 percent more noise removed than AirPods 4 with ANC. Our AirPods 5 launch report has both framings.

Where the 3x line comes from, and where it does not
The AirPods Pro 3 figure appears on Apple’s AirPods comparison page. It does not appear in the AirPods 5 press release and it is not on the AirPods 5 product page, so it should be quoted as comparison-page wording rather than as a headline claim.
What it does establish is direction. Apple is explicitly placing its $249 sealed-tip earbuds above its $129 open-ear ones on noise cancellation, which is exactly why the AirPods 5 superlative is written as the industry’s best in an open-ear design rather than the industry’s best, full stop.
Why you cannot compound the multipliers
- Neither claim states what is being measured, in what units, at what frequencies.
- Neither states a test method, a noise source, a level or a room, so neither can be reproduced.
- Both carry up to, which describes a ceiling rather than a typical result.
- The two claims may not even measure the same quantity, since one is worded as noise removed and the other as more Active Noise Cancellation.
- Multiplying two unreproducible ceilings against an unknown baseline produces another unknown.
A 4.5x figure for AirPods Pro 3 against AirPods 4 with ANC would be arithmetic, not reporting, and Apple has never printed it.
The AirPods 5 claim also shifts its own baseline depending on which Apple page you read. The press release names AirPods 4 with ANC. The product page says the previous generation, and AirPods 4 shipped in two versions in 2024, only one of which had noise cancellation at all. The comparison only makes sense against the ANC model, which is what the press release says outright.
What the prices look like against the ladder

Three of the four run the same H2 chip, and Apple separates them on noise cancellation with multipliers rather than with measurements. The event recap covers the rest of the lineup, and the iPhone 18 Pro announcement shows the same house habit of comparing each new part against last year’s part.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a decibel figure, a frequency range, an attenuation curve or a test method for any AirPods model, so no rung of this ladder can be converted into an absolute. It has not stated whether the 1.5x and 3x claims measure the same quantity, and it has not published a relative claim for AirPods Max 2 at all. Nobody has worn AirPods 5 outside Apple yet, and our live blog records only what was said on stage.
