With AirPods 5 on sale, Apple’s headphone range comes down to four prices: $129, $149, $249 and $549. The steps between them are $20, $100 and $300, and each one buys something very different.
The cheapest step is the easiest to misread. Going from $129 to $149 does not change the earbuds you get, it changes the case, and Apple’s own battery ratings then move with it.

All four prices are current Apple Store figures. AirPods 5 has been orderable since Apple’s September 9 announcement and reaches stores on Friday, September 18.

The $20 step buys a case, and two extra hours
Apple’s spec sheet gives both AirPods 5 models the same H2 chip, the same 4.3 g earbuds, the same IP57 rating and the same 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 mm case footprint. The $149 version adds wireless charging from an Apple Watch charger or a Qi charger, a speaker in the case for Find My, and a force sensor with volume swipe.
It also carries higher battery ratings: up to five hours with Active Noise Cancellation and up to 22 hours with the case, against four and 20 for the $129 model. Apple publishes both figures and explains neither, which is the single strangest thing on the AirPods 5 spec page.
The $100 step buys sensors, not just sound
AirPods Pro 3 at $249 is the only current model with a heart rate sensor for workouts, and the only one with Apple’s hearing features: a hearing test, hearing aid functionality and hearing protection, plus Automatic Conversation Boost. Its case also adds MagSafe charging and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, neither of which appears on either AirPods 5 case.
The battery ratings scale too: up to eight hours with noise cancellation, up to 10 hours in Transparency with Hearing Aid, up to 6.5 hours with heart rate sensing during workouts. Against that, the $149 AirPods 5 is rated for five.
The $300 step buys a different kind of product
AirPods Max 2 at $549 is over-ear rather than in-ear or open-ear, and Apple’s comparison page lists it with an H2 chip in each ear cup, Bluetooth 5.3 and up to 20 hours of listening with noise cancellation. Its Smart Case holds no battery, so the 20 hours is the whole figure rather than a starting point.
That is also where Apple’s published detail thins out fastest. The Max 2 rows we read sit on the comparison page rather than on a tech specs sheet of their own, and Apple published no press release for the model in September.
Price against rated hours
The arithmetic below is ours, not Apple’s. It divides each price by the total listening time Apple rates with noise cancellation on, which is the only battery figure published in the same form for all four.

Treat it as a framing device rather than a verdict. Apple rates hours under conditions it does not publish, and the $549 pair is a different form factor with a different job, as our event recap noted when the range was laid out on stage.
What has not been confirmed
- No discount, bundle or promotional price has been published for any of the four, so the ladder above is the whole published picture.
- Apple’s trade-in page shows no per-model dollar estimate for any AirPods model.
- Apple does not say why the $129 and $149 models carry different on-bud battery ratings when the earbuds are listed identically.
- Neither AirPods 5 box includes a USB-C cable or power adapter, and Apple has not priced a recommended one.
- Apple publishes no decibel figure for noise cancellation on any model, so the price steps cannot be read as measured performance.
AirPods 5 reaches stores on Friday, September 18, the same day as Apple Watch Series 12 and iPhone 18 Pro. iOS 27 lands first, on Monday, September 14, and unlocks the Siri AI features on the two AirPods 5 models.
