The same gap follows AirPods 5 into stores on Friday, September 18. Apple sells the earbuds in more than 65 countries and regions, but the assistant it advertises alongside them depends on the connected device and its region, not on the AirPods themselves.

Where Siri AI does work in the EU
Apple draws the line by device and operating system, not by product category. Its own release states plainly that “Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language,” while iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU do not get it at launch. That means the same pair of AirPods can reach Siri AI when paired with a Mac in the EU, and not reach it when paired with an iPhone in the same room.

What still works on AirPods in the EU
- “Hey Siri” and short-form “Siri” hands-free activation, unaffected by the EU carve-out
- Custom EQ, the new iOS 27 setting for adjusting lows, mids and highs, which Apple states with no regional restriction
- Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency and Adaptive Audio, none of which Apple ties to Siri AI’s availability
- GymKit heart rate sensing on AirPods Pro 3, which is a hardware feature independent of Siri AI
AirPods 5 buyers in the EU face the same gap
Nothing about AirPods 5 hardware changes this. The earbuds pair the same way everywhere Apple sells them, and Apple’s marketing highlights Siri AI as part of the pitch. A buyer in an EU country who picks up AirPods 5 on September 18 gets the same hands-free Siri that has existed on AirPods for years, paired to whichever iPhone they own, and gets the newer conversational assistant only once Apple extends it to iOS in the EU, a date Apple has not announced.
Apple’s AirPods specifications page ties a separate feature, Live Translation, to “Apple Intelligence turned on” rather than to Siri AI specifically. Apple has not stated whether Live Translation shares the Siri AI carve-out for EU-region iPhones, or whether it is treated as a distinct Apple Intelligence feature with its own availability.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not given a date for when Siri AI reaches iOS, iPadOS or watchOS in the EU, beyond describing the delay as tied to finding an approach compatible with its privacy and security standards there. It has also not published a full list of which other September 2026 features, on AirPods or otherwise, follow the same EU timeline as Siri AI rather than the worldwide one.
