Apple recently partnered with Yahoo Sports to offer a fun new way to watch live games. The two massive companies agreed to stream alternate broadcasts for select Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer events. These special feeds will play for free on the Yahoo platform, acting as a clever tool to pull more fans toward the paid video streaming platform.

The new partnership gives viewers a free peek at live games

The deal covers two upcoming Friday Night Baseball matchups and two soccer matches. For the baseball side, Yahoo Sports writers Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman will host a pregame show and call the first two innings. To watch the rest of the baseball game, viewers must click a direct link to the Apple TV app and sign up for a subscription.

Soccer fans get a slightly different setup. Yahoo will stream two full soccer matches featuring hosts from a popular podcast called The Cooligans. These specific soccer broadcasts will include fun extra video feeds, like a camera worn by the referee and a special angle shot entirely on a smartphone.

This setup works like a free sample at a grocery store. Yahoo gets to host live sports without paying for the top-tier broadcast rights. Meanwhile, the tech brand gets to put its premium video streams in front of a massive audience of dedicated sports readers.

This smart pairing gives fans a fresh flavor of sports commentary while proving that companies will try creative new hooks to pull you into their long-term paid subscriptions.
