We might soon see a massive jump in battery life for modern smartphones, and the secret actually comes from a design choice made by Apple. Recent reports indicate that several mobile makers are getting ready to copy a metal casing trick that first appeared on the iPhone. This structural shift could help upcoming Android flagships safely push their capacities all the way up to 10,000 mAh without making the devices unnecessarily thick.

Metal enclosures eliminate the need for extra battery swelling space

Most traditional batteries use soft pouches. These soft bags need extra breathing room inside the phone because they can swell up over time. When a company switches to a hard aluminum or steel shell, it can pack the internal cells much tighter. This rigid casing safely controls the battery while improving heat flow across the device.

The industry first noticed metal enclosures when Apple used an aluminum casing for the iPhone 16 Pro battery. The company then upgraded to a stronger steel shell for later models. Now, leak sources claim that Chinese manufacturers want to adopt this steel case strategy for their own high-end devices.

Stacked cells allow manufacturers to squeeze more power inside phones

By pairing these rigid steel cases with stacked cell manufacturing, hardware engineers can maximize the usable space inside a phone. Taking away the old swelling clearance means makers can drop in batteries with 9,000 mAh to 10,000 mAh capacities. The approach currently lives on the base iPhone 18 and the premium iPhone 18 Pro Max series, but it could soon spread across the entire mobile market.

If these hardware plans work out, running out of juice before the end of the day could become a thing of the past. As long as device makers figure out how to handle the extra weight that comes with metal shells, users can expect to spend a lot less time hunting for a charger.
