Apple Drops Rare Third Release Candidates For macOS Sonoma And Sequoia

macOS Sonoma Sequia

Apple is pushing out another round of updates for older Mac operating systems. Developers can now download the third release candidates for both macOS Sonoma 14.8.8 and macOS Sequoia 15.7.8. This rare move comes right alongside the newest macOS Tahoe 26.6 beta 3 release for modern devices. The company does not usually send out a third round of testing builds just before a final public launch. If you still rely on these older software versions, expect an official update to hit your computer soon.

Developers get new build numbers for both older operating systems

The newest release candidate for macOS Sonoma 14.8.8 uses build number 23J610. This follows a long testing schedule. The first build arrived on May 26 as version 23J604. A second build then followed on June 15 as version 23J607.

The schedule looks identical for macOS Sequoia 15.7.8. Its newest test version is build 24G812. The original build rolled out on May 26 as version 24G806, and the second version dropped on June 15 as build 24G809.

Mobile users are also getting fresh software today. Developers can now install the iOS 26.6 beta 3 to check out upcoming features on mobile devices.

The company focuses solely on backend security for these updates

You will not find any flashy new features or design changes in these specific Mac updates. The official release notes only point to standard security improvements. This makes sense for operating systems that are no longer the primary focus for the tech maker.

Tablet users are seeing similar background changes. The company just pushed the latest iPadOS 26.6 beta 3 to developers today as well. It is clear that the brand is working hard to tighten up security and squash bugs across its entire hardware lineup.

Once these final release candidates pass developer checks, regular users should see the official updates appear in their system settings. Keeping your computer updated remains the best way to protect your personal files from new online threats.
