Apple’s Own Pages Disagree on When Rosetta Support Actually Ends

Apple has three live pages describing when Rosetta, the translation layer that lets Intel-built apps run on Apple silicon Macs, actually stops working. They do not agree with each other. Two say Rosetta survives through macOS 27, with a games-only exception starting at macOS 28. A third, published eight days later, says macOS 26 was the last release to support Rosetta at all.

All three pages are Apple’s own, and all three are live as of this week. The Mac Observer is reporting the contradiction as Apple has published it, on all three pages, without picking which one is correct.

What developer news said on September 1

Apple’s developer news post opens with the history: “In 2020, we introduced Apple silicon for Mac computers, providing Rosetta as a translation layer during the transition period. As announced at WWDC last year, we’re now concluding this transition.” It lists two milestones. First, “macOS 26.4 or later: Users may receive a system notification when launching apps that rely on Rosetta, alerting them to update to an Apple silicon native version.” Second, its bullet on macOS 27 reads, in full, “macOS 27: Final release to support Rosetta.” The same bullet continues that “Intel-only apps will no longer run on Mac computers with Apple silicon after this update.”

The same page carves out an exception: “Please note that Rosetta functionality for older, unmaintained gaming titles that rely on Intel-based frameworks will continue to be supported” starting with computers using macOS 28. It also tells developers who have not yet updated their apps to “begin the transition immediately” and build a universal binary, which it says “runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers.”

What the support article says

Apple Support article 102527, titled “Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon,” states: “Rosetta is currently available for any Mac with Apple silicon, and it will remain available through the forthcoming macOS 27,” which the same page calls “the next major macOS release.” It then draws its own line at the release after that: “Starting with computers using macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.”

That matches the developer news post from September 1 on both counts: Rosetta survives through macOS 27, and only a games exception continues into macOS 28.

What developer news said eight days later

A second developer news post, published the same day Apple held its September 9 product keynote, tells a different story. Under the heading “Optimize your app for macOS 27,” it states plainly: “macOS 26 is the final release supporting Intel Mac computers and Rosetta.” The same sentence adds: “macOS 27 will be Apple silicon only.” It instructs developers to “set your Xcode build architecture to arm64 only, then rebuild and resubmit” if they want to limit an app to Apple silicon Macs.

That is a full release earlier than the other two pages claim, and it sits awkwardly against the September 1 post’s own instruction to ship universal binaries that run on Intel Macs, which this page’s Apple-silicon-only framing does not fit.

Rosetta has been part of every Apple silicon Mac since the platform’s introduction in 2020, so a hard end to Intel app translation is a real change for anyone still running older, unconverted software. That includes people who bought a Mac as recently as this year. macOS 27 itself is expected this fall, per Apple’s own developer news, though no page reviewed here gives it a specific date.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not corrected either page, has not said which of the three is the error, and has not explained the eight-day gap between the two developer news posts. It has not stated whether the September 9 post means something narrower than its own wording suggests, and it has not published a single page that reconciles macOS 26, 27 and 28 into one timeline. The Mac Observer is not resolving the discrepancy here, only reporting what each page currently says.

As of September 12, all three pages remain live and unchanged, a quiet developer-facing contradiction sitting behind a week dominated by iPhone 18 Pro coverage and Apple’s own live blog of the September 9 keynote. iOS 27 and its sibling operating systems arrive Monday, September 14, though macOS 27 itself is dated only to this fall.
