Lease an iPhone 18 Pro through Apple Upgrade and add AppleCare back the only way Apple currently prices it, AppleCare One at $19.99 a month, and the total comes to $54.98 a month. That is already above the more than $42 a month Apple charged for the iPhone Upgrade Program it retired in July, the program that included AppleCare in a single payment.
This is the calculation most coverage of Apple Upgrade skips, because the $34.99 monthly lease figure reads like a discount against the old program’s $42-plus. It only looks that way once AppleCare is left out of the new number.

Adding AppleCare back to the new lease
Apple has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for iPhone 18 Pro, so the only priced way to add coverage today is AppleCare One, at $19.99 a month for up to three products, or AppleCare One Family, at $49.99 a month for up to six people once it launches September 14. Put the cheaper of the two next to the $34.99 lease and the combined monthly cost is $54.98.

Apple’s own description of the old program states its cost as “more than $42 a month,” a floor rather than a ceiling, so the two programs cannot be compared to the dollar with certainty. What can be said plainly is that $54.98 a month for a lease plus AppleCare One already clears that stated floor, before tax and before any trade-in credit is applied to either route.
The one place the new math can still win
AppleCare One’s $19.99 covers up to three products, not one. A household adding an Apple Watch Series 12 or a pair of AirPods under the same $19.99 plan spreads that cost across more devices than the old iPhone Upgrade Program ever covered, since that program only ever applied to a single iPhone. Extra devices beyond three add $5.99 a month each. Judged against covering one phone alone, the new combination costs more. Judged against covering an entire household, it can come out ahead.
Neither route hands you the phone for free at the end
Both programs are built around paying monthly rather than owning outright on day one. Apple Upgrade’s own terms describe the end of a lease as a choice between upgrading, buying the device outright, or returning it, with no upgrade fee stated for either program and no published buyout price for the new one. The retired program worked similarly in practice, letting a customer trade in and start again after enough payments, rather than handing over the phone free and clear. This is not a recommendation to choose one route over the other, only a record of what each one adds up to.
Paying in full sidesteps both totals. A $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro bought outright, or financed at 0% APR through Apple Card Monthly Installments over 24 months, costs $1,199 either way, with no AppleCare figure attached unless the buyer adds one separately. That is a smaller number than either program in this comparison, at the cost of the eligibility and carrier requirements that come with Apple Card financing.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple has not published the exact monthly cost of the retired iPhone Upgrade Program beyond “more than $42.”
- Apple has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for iPhone 18 Pro, so a single-device add-on cheaper than AppleCare One cannot be ruled in or out.
