A two-tier lineup for two years
Apple’s tech specs page for the second-generation SE lists a 32GB capacity alongside its S8 chip. The very next chip generation broke from that figure entirely: Apple’s Series 9 tech specs and Ultra 2 tech specs both list 64GB, published the same month in September 2023. For two full years, the Apple Watch Series line and the Ultra line carried twice the storage of the SE sitting beside them on the same shop page, a gap Apple’s own spec sheets record but never explained.

The gap looks larger once earlier models are considered. Apple’s tech specs for Series 7, Series 8 and the original Ultra list no storage figure at all; the capacity field is simply absent from those pages. That makes the second-generation SE’s 32GB the earliest storage number of any kind on Apple’s record for this product line, not a like-for-like starting point next to a matching Series or Ultra figure from the same year. A true side-by-side comparison only becomes possible once Series 9 and Ultra 2 started publishing 64GB in 2023.

Apple’s shop page lists three current watches at three different prices and one identical storage figure across all of them. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 tech specs page closed the gap that opened in 2023, the same year the figure last changed for the Series and Ultra lines. Whatever runs on watchOS 27 today, from the entry SE 3 to the flagship Ultra 4, has the same amount of space to hold it.
The chip changed twice without moving the number
Storage has now held at 64GB across three separate chip generations. Series 9 and Ultra 2 introduced the figure on the S9 chip in 2023. Series 10, Series 11 and SE 3 carried it forward on the S10 chip in 2024 and 2025. Series 12 and Ultra 4 carry it again on the S11 chip this year. Apple has changed the processor twice since the storage figure last moved, and has published no figure suggesting a third change is close.
The second-generation SE that never received the 64GB bump shares another line with two of the watches it launched alongside. Apple’s watchOS 27 compatibility footnote lists Series 9 and later, SE 3 and later, and Ultra 2 and later as supported. Series 7, Series 8, the original Ultra and the second-generation SE itself are absent from that list, their last major software release being watchOS 26. The same watch that sat below the storage ceiling for two years is now also below the software floor.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a reason for the 2023 jump or the two-year wait before the SE received it, has not stated how much of the 64GB a fresh install of watchOS 27 uses, and has not said whether a future SE will move first the next time the figure changes.
