Apple Watch Series 12’s Display: LTPO3, 2000 Nits and What Always-On Actually Shows

Apple Watch Series 12 uses what Apple’s tech specs page calls an Always-On Retina display with wide-angle OLEDs and LTPO3, refreshing down to 1Hz, with a peak brightness of 2000 nits and a minimum brightness of 1 nit. Those are the same peak and minimum brightness figures Apple published for Series 11 last year, which makes the display one of the few parts of Apple Watch Series 12 that did not move this generation.

Apple Watch Series 12 reaches stores Friday, September 18. The panel is unchanged in its numbers, but it is worth separating what Apple states about the technology from what its Always-On behavior actually means in practice, since Apple’s own wording is the only source available before anyone outside Apple has used the watch.

What LTPO3 and Always-On mean, in Apple’s own terms

Apple’s specs page names the technology rather than explaining it: a wide-angle OLED panel, an LTPO3 backplane, and a refresh rate that can drop as low as 1Hz. LTPO panels are what let an Apple Watch display stay lit at low power between wrist-raise moments rather than switching fully off, which is the mechanism behind Always-On. Apple states a minimum brightness of 1 nit, which is the dim level the always-on state can fall to, and a peak of 2000 nits for outdoor legibility. Apple has used the same wide-angle OLED and LTPO3 description for Series 10, Series 11 and both recent Ultra generations, and its Series 12 specs page does not describe a change to the technology itself, only to what runs on top of it.

Brightness that has not moved across two generations

Neither line’s peak brightness changed this year. Apple Watch Ultra 4 keeps the same 3000-nit figure Ultra 3 had, and Series 12 keeps Series 11’s 2000 nits. The 1000-nit gap between the two current lines is the same gap Apple published last year, so the Series-versus-Ultra brightness difference is a carried-over design decision rather than something new to Series 12 or Ultra 4 specifically.

Where size changes the numbers, and where it does not

Apple’s specs page lists 326 ppi for both the 42mm and 46mm Series 12 cases, so choosing a case size changes the physical display area and the exact pixel count, 374 by 446 pixels on the smaller case against 416 by 496 on the larger one, without changing sharpness. Apple’s page also lists the display area itself: 970 square millimeters on the 42mm case against 1196 square millimeters on the 46mm case, about 23 percent more screen on the larger size. Peak brightness, minimum brightness and refresh behavior are stated the same way for both sizes on Apple’s page. Apple’s specs page lists 42mm and 46mm dimensions for the aluminum and titanium cases; it does not break out a separate resolution figure for the ceramic case on the same page.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a physical screen size in inches or millimeters for Series 12, only pixel counts and area in square millimeters. It has not stated a contrast ratio, a color gamut figure or a specific off-axis viewing angle for the wide-angle OLED description, and it has not said whether the always-on state’s minimum brightness can be limited further by a user, beyond the 1-nit figure on the specs page. None of that has been measured independently either, since the watch has not yet reached anyone outside Apple.
