If you were hoping for a massive overhaul in the next smart wearable from Apple, you might need to lower your expectations. Recent industry reports indicate that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 will largely stick to the same formula as the current model. Instead of introducing a brand new design or big hardware changes, the company is reportedly planning to focus almost entirely on minor performance tweaks and basic software updates.
The update brings bug fixes and a new modular face
The main changes for the Series 12 will come through the watchOS 27 update. According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the tech giant is slowing down the pace of its wearable upgrades. Since it already leads the premium smartwatch market in health tracking and display quality, the company is mostly just competing with its own older models right now.
One of the few visible changes expected this year is a new modular watch face. The design takes inspiration from the Ultra model but removes a few dense features so it fits better on a standard screen. Beyond that visual change, the update will center on fixing bugs and smoothing out general day-to-day performance.
You should also not expect any direct on-device artificial intelligence capabilities. The current models only pack between 1GB and 1.5GB of RAM. That limited memory makes it difficult to run complex AI programs directly on the wrist. The device might be able to display AI results that are processed on a connected phone, but the watch itself will not handle the heavy computational work.
With hardware remaining largely the same, this year looks like a basic refinement rather than a major step forward for the product line.
