Apple Watch Series 9 and watchOS 27: Which New Health Features Actually Arrive

watchOS 27 will install on an Apple Watch Series 9, but the free update does not hand that watch the new Health Sensing System Apple announced alongside Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple publishes a list of what watchOS 27 brings to already-owned watches, and the five-second heart rate sampling, the rebuilt HRV measurements and the new Readiness score are not on it.

That gap between what the software update installs and what the new sensors enable is, per Apple’s own materials, the single most-asked question about this year’s watch lineup. It has a clean answer once the two Apple press releases are read side by side.

What watchOS 27 actually brings to older Apple Watches

Apple’s watchOS 27 page states the update is compatible with Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, provided the paired iPhone is an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. Every one of those watches, old and new, gets Siri AI with personal context in beta, a dynamic app grid, a single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack, perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking, and a Workout Buddy that no longer needs a nearby iPhone.

Why the confusion started

Apple announced watchOS 27 and the Health Sensing System in the same week, in adjacent press releases, and both are described as arriving this September. It is a reasonable but incorrect leap from there to assume one update delivers both. Apple’s own Series 12 announcement is specific that the new sensing capability comes from “new optical and electrical heart sensors” and larger, more power-efficient LEDs, which is hardware language, not software language.

What is tied specifically to Series 12 and Ultra 4

Apple describes heart rate measured every five seconds all day, HRV measured every five minutes, split into Recovery HRV and overall HRV, a new daytime vitals view, and the Readiness score, all inside the Series 12 release. The Ultra 4 release repeats the same claims and attributes them to “the same Health Sensing System” as Series 12. Neither Apple’s watchOS 27 page nor its compatibility footnote lists any of this for Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2 or Ultra 3.

The one chip-level feature Apple is explicit about

Apple’s clearest hardware statement concerns Audio Intelligence, the cluster of features covering Sound Recognition alerts, Live Rewind and Siri Recap. Apple attributes it to a Secure Exclave inside the new S11 chip, a hardware-isolated compartment it says processes audio on-device with immediate deletion. A chip-level compartment cannot arrive through a software update on a watch that does not have the chip, which is the clearest single piece of evidence that this year’s sensing gains are not universal across every watchOS 27-compatible model.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a single combined chart showing every watchOS 27 feature against every compatible watch model, which is exactly the document that would settle this question at a glance. It has also not stated whether any part of the Health Sensing System could reach older watches in a future update, or confirmed the opposite. The distinction currently rests on reading the Series 12, Ultra 4 and watchOS 27 pages together, because Apple has not written the comparison itself.

As of September 12, 2026, watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, for every Series 9 and later, SE 3, and Ultra 2 and later watch, carrying the software features listed above and none of the sensor-dependent ones.
