An Apple Watch Ultra 4 with a cellular plan can carry a phone number, 64GB of storage and satellite messaging without an iPhone in your pocket, and Apple includes two years of satellite service. Setting it up is a different matter: watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE from the second generation onward, running iOS 27.
That split is the practical question behind a day in the hills, and Apple answers it in pieces scattered across a spec sheet, a press release and a watchOS page. Here is what each source actually says, and where it says nothing at all.

Two of those lines do the heavy lifting. A cellular model carries its own connection, so calls, messages and data do not route through a phone, and Apple lists 5G NR and LTE bands for model A3579. The 64GB of storage is the same figure Apple gives the Series 12 and the SE 3, and Apple does not break down what that space holds or how much of it is free for your own content.

Satellite, and the two years Apple includes
Apple lists three satellite features on the Ultra 4: Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My. The two included years are the same window Apple applies to Ultra 3 and later, which means an Ultra 3 bought last September does not start again with the new model.
Satellite is also the clearest hardware line between the two new watches. Apple’s comparison lists satellite features for Ultra 4 and not for the Apple Watch Series 12, whatever plan you put on it.
What Apple has not published is the price of a third year, or what happens to the features when the window closes. It also gives no coverage map, no message limits and no statement about which countries the satellite features work in.
Workout Buddy no longer needs a phone nearby
One watchOS 27 change is squarely aimed at leaving the phone behind. Apple says Workout Buddy now works without a nearby iPhone, over Wi-Fi or cellular, and adds Spanish alongside its new pace, distance and duration insights.
Apple does not say what the feature falls back to with neither connection available, and it publishes no data requirement. The feature is a spoken running commentary on your session rather than guidance, and how you use any of it is your call, not ours.

One wrinkle in the pairing requirement is worth flagging. Both the watchOS 27 page and the Ultra 4 tech specs name the same floor of iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE from the second generation, so an older phone rules the watch out rather than merely limiting what it can do.
The pattern is that measurement happens on the wrist and interpretation happens on the phone. Health Age, for instance, is a Health app feature that requires an Apple Watch for its inputs, which include VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep and HRV. None of it is a diagnosis, and Apple labels the Vitals app as wellness rather than medical use.
What Apple has not said
- No price for satellite service after the two included years, and no coverage detail.
- No battery figure for any of the 50, 84, 25 and 45 hour ratings with cellular in use.
- No cellular carrier list or plan pricing for the new model.
- No statement on how long the watch stays useful if the paired iPhone is never nearby.
- No per-configuration prices. Apple’s shop page publishes only a starting figure of $799.
