iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max shipped a year ago in Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. Two names from last year, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue, do not appear anywhere on Apple’s new color lineup, and Apple’s own newsroom release confirms the replacement lineup without mentioning either discontinued color by name.
Apple never announces that a color has ended. It simply stops listing it, the way it did with the phones and the programs covered elsewhere in this look at what quietly changed with this generation. Silver is the one name that survived the swap.

What just left the color lineup
Apple’s own spec pages for iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max listed exactly three finishes: Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue. Apple’s September 9 newsroom release for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max lists exactly four: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue are not among them, and neither appears on any current Apple store page for a phone Apple still sells. Both colors ended after a single generation.

What replaced them
Apple describes Burgundy as a dark cherry red and Glacier as a light blue, the two entirely new names in this year’s lineup. Black is not new to the Pro line generally, but it is new to this specific run, since iPhone 17 Pro skipped it entirely in favor of the orange and blue options it is now retiring in turn. Silver is the only finish to survive two consecutive Pro generations unchanged in name, on either the smaller iPhone 18 Pro or the iPhone 18 Pro Max, since both sizes share the same four-color lineup.
Silver’s unusual streak
Among the three most recent Pro generations Apple has documented, only Silver has appeared two years running without a name change. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue lasted exactly one year, 2025 to 2026, before Apple moved on, and Black’s own absence during that same year lasted exactly as long. iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro share the same case construction, an aluminum unibody design with a Ceramic Shield 2 front and a Ceramic Shield back, so this particular color change did not arrive with a material change too.
Black returns, but not in titanium
The last time the Pro line offered a black finish before this year was iPhone 16 Pro’s Black Titanium, part of a lineup built from titanium rather than the aluminum unibody design iPhone 18 Pro uses now. iPhone 17 Pro moved the Pro line to an aluminum unibody and dropped Black for Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue. iPhone 18 Pro keeps the aluminum body and brings Black back, but as an aluminum finish, not the titanium one iPhone 16 Pro buyers remember. The color name returned; the material behind it did not.

What Apple has not said
Apple has not said whether Cosmic Orange or Deep Blue will return in a future generation, and it has not published sales figures for any iPhone color, so there is no way to confirm from Apple’s own material why either was retired after one year. Apple also has not said whether Glacier or Burgundy will last past this single generation, given that Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue looked just as permanent twelve months ago. Anyone who bought a Cosmic Orange or Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max keeps a color Apple is no longer making, on a phone Apple is no longer selling new, a combination worth knowing before trading it in against the September 18 arrival of iPhone 18 Pro.
