Apple named iOS 27 in its support library exactly once before this week, and it did it in the release notes for an iOS 26 update. The line reads that iOS 26.6 “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27,” which means some of Monday’s groundwork was already done on your iPhone weeks ago.
iOS 27 itself arrives on Monday, September 14, free, for iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Apple has published no support document for it, so the “About iOS 26 Updates” page is currently the only Apple Support page that mentions the new release at all.

Two iOS 26 updates that point at Monday

The iOS 26.6.2 line is the practical one. Apple fixed a bug that stopped software updates downloading over cellular six days before shipping its biggest update of the year, and it did so on September 8, the day before the event.
That fix does not change Apple’s own instruction, which asks for Wi-Fi rather than cellular: back up first, then connect to power and Wi-Fi, then go to Settings, General, Software Update.
What Apple does not say about the Spotlight line
Apple gives the sentence and nothing else. It does not say what the optimization changes, it does not say whether it shortens the install, and it does not connect the line to any of the speed claims on the iOS 27 page.
The absence matters because of a claim that circulates after every major release. When an iPhone’s battery drains faster in the days after an update, the near-universal explanation offered online is that Spotlight is re-indexing. Apple does not document that.
What Apple actually documents sits on its battery-drain article, under a heading about battery life being less than expected after an update, and it is deliberately general.

So the two lines sit oddly together. Apple says in an iOS 26 release note that it prepared the Spotlight index for iOS 27, and in its battery article it declines to name any post-update background task. Both are Apple’s words, and neither is a mechanism anyone outside Apple has verified.
The support page that is dated, and the ones that are not
The “About iOS 26 Updates” page was last updated on September 9, 2026, the day of the event, and it remains the only dated Apple Support change in that window. Apple’s security releases index still tops out at iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2 from September 8, with no iOS 27 row.
Meanwhile the articles people reach on update day are older. The update instructions are dated December 5, 2025 and written around iOS 18 and iOS 26. The storage article carries iOS 26 screenshots. What arrives on Monday, and on which iPhones
The iOS 27 list runs from iPhone 11 up to iPhone 18 Pro, which reaches stores on September 18 with iOS 27 preinstalled. Apple Intelligence is a much shorter list: iPhone 16 and later plus iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

iOS 27 is due on Monday, September 14. Until it ships, the iOS 26.6 release note is the only place Apple’s support library names it, and Apple’s post-update guidance is to wait a few days before judging battery life.
