iOS 27 still supports the iPhone SE. Apple’s compatibility list ends with “iPhone SE (2nd generation and later),” which is the only open-ended entry on a list that otherwise names all 33 iPhones individually, and the free update lands on Monday, September 14.
What that same phrase means for a new Apple Watch is less settled. Two Apple pages published in the same week give two different SE requirements for pairing with Apple Watch Series 12, and Apple has published nothing that reconciles them.

The only open-ended entry on Apple’s list
Apple’s iOS 27 page spells out every other model. iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, the iPhone 16 family including iPhone 16e, the iPhone 15 family, the iPhone 14 family, the iPhone 13 family including iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 12 family including iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

Then it stops naming models and writes a rule instead: iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Because Apple lists iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e separately by name, the SE entry covers the SE line specifically rather than every small iPhone Apple has sold since.
iPhone SE (1st generation) is not covered. Apple’s compatibility line starts at the 2nd generation, and Apple groups the 1st generation with iPhone 6s and earlier in its restart instructions, which is a fair indication of how old that hardware now is.
What an iPhone SE gets, and what it does not
Running iOS 27 is not the same as running Apple Intelligence, and no iPhone SE qualifies for the second list. Apple’s device requirement is iPhone 16 and later plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

That split is the shape of iOS 27 across the whole installed base. Apple lists 33 iPhones for the update and a much shorter set for Apple Intelligence, so everything from iPhone 11 through iPhone 15 Plus, an SE included, takes the update without the AI features.
Two Apple pages, two SE requirements
The discrepancy shows up where iOS 27 meets the new hardware. Apple’s Apple Watch Series 12 specifications say the watch requires an iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 27 or later. Apple’s health and fitness press release, published the same day, says watchOS 27 requires iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE 3 with iOS 27.
One page admits the 2nd generation SE, the other names the 3rd generation. Apple does not flag the difference or say which governs, and there is no support document for either the watch or iOS 27 to settle it.

What to do with an SE on Monday
Apple’s published sequence is the same on every supported iPhone: back up using iCloud or your computer, plug the device into power and connect to Wi-Fi, then Settings, General, Software Update, Download and Install. Those steps follow Apple’s current description and may differ slightly once iOS 27 ships.
Apple publishes no free-space figure for iOS 27 and no download size, which matters more on a small-capacity SE than on a new iPhone 18 Pro.
