Apple’s tech specs page describes the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max as an aluminum unibody design with a Ceramic Shield 2 front and a Ceramic Shield back. Titanium, the metal Apple used for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro, is now on the iPhone Air and the iPhone Duo instead.
So 2026 is the second year running in which Apple’s most expensive slab iPhone is aluminum, and the first in which its single most expensive iPhone is titanium. Apple has published no reason for the split, and it markets neither metal as the premium one.

What Apple attaches to the aluminum unibody
The metal comes with the most detailed environmental figures of any part of the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s product environmental report states 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 40 percent recycled content across the phone, and packaging that is 100 percent fiber-based.

Inside, the same report lists 100 percent recycled cobalt and 95 percent recycled lithium in the battery, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 80 percent recycled steel in several components including the vapor chamber chassis.
The back is the part most people misread. It is Ceramic Shield, not Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple reserves for the front on this model. The iPhone Duo uses the same arrangement, while the iPhone Air is listed with Ceramic Shield 2 on both faces.
Titanium moved to the thin iPhone and the folding one
Apple’s titanium products this year are the iPhone Air and the iPhone Duo. The Duo gets a Grade 5 titanium frame and a 3D-printed hinge cover Apple describes as 100 percent recycled titanium, plus an 85 percent recycled titanium enclosure and a 100 percent recycled aluminum frame element.
That is a more complicated recipe than the Pro’s, and it lands at a lower headline figure of 35 percent recycled content against the Pro’s 40 percent. The two also sit $700 apart at every storage tier, which is where a Duo against Pro Max comparison usually starts.

The weights are not a like-for-like series, because the iPhone 15 Pro was a 6.1-inch phone and the three that followed are 6.3-inch. What the table does show is that the move away from titanium did not make the Pro lighter, which is one of the quieter differences between generations.
The durability claims attach to the glass, not the metal
Apple’s environmental report states that Ceramic Shield 2 has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation of Ceramic Shield. That claim is about the front glass, and it is about scratches rather than drops.
For the aluminum itself Apple publishes no scratch, dent or finish durability claim, and no drop rating for the phone as a whole. The only sealed-body figure is IP68, rated to a maximum depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not explained why the Pro left titanium, has not published a drop or bend specification, has not rated the anodised finish, and has not priced a single repair for any product announced at the September 9 event. Its current comparison pages also leave the front glass and recycled content unlisted for the iPhone 17 Pro it no longer sells.
