Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs list digital zoom up to 40x, and the phrase optical-quality stops at 8x. Everything between those two numbers is a part of the camera Apple has published one figure about and nothing else.
The published range works like this. Three lenses cover 13 mm, 24 mm and 100 mm, two extra steps at 48 mm and 200 mm are listed at 12MP, and Apple sums the whole thing as 8x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out and a 16x optical-quality zoom range. Above the 200 mm step there is a single line: digital zoom up to 40x. Our camera explainer covers the lenses themselves.

Where the optical-quality range stops
The last step Apple attaches the phrase to is the 8x Telephoto at 200 mm, listed at 12MP and produced from the 48MP telephoto lens at 100 mm. Past that point the vocabulary changes to digital zoom, and the only number is the ceiling.

That means the advertised zoom span and the maximum zoom are two different things. The 16x figure describes the distance between the widest and longest optical-quality steps. The 40x figure describes how far the Camera app will keep going.
Apple’s own numbers do not scale from one base
It is tempting to work out what 40x means in millimetres, and Apple’s figures do not permit it. The 2x step is listed at 48 mm, which is twice the 24 mm main. The 4x step is 100 mm and the 8x step is 200 mm, and both of those imply a 25 mm starting point rather than 24 mm.

Because the multiplier and the focal length do not line up consistently in Apple’s own list, no figure for 40x can be derived from it. Apple has not printed one, and we are not going to invent one.

Apple does not print a digital ceiling on every spec page, so this is not a complete history. What the comparison does show is that the 40x line is four times the ceiling Apple gives the iPhone Duo cameras, a phone with no telephoto lens, and that the figure has grown alongside the sensor resolution rather than alongside the glass.
What the 40x ceiling does not tell you
It is a limit, not a description. Apple publishes no resolution for frames past 8x, no statement about which capture formats remain available up there, and no maximum zoom figure for any of the video modes, which run to 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps with ProRes recorded externally.
Apple also makes no stabilization claim beyond the hardware line itself. The 3D sensor-shift system is listed against the 100 mm telephoto, and nothing in the specs says how it behaves at the longest digital settings. The Pro and Pro Max sheets carry identical camera lines, so the size choice does not change any of this.
What Apple has not said
- The resolution of a frame captured anywhere between 8x and 40x.
- A focal length equivalent for the 40x setting, or for any digital step.
- Whether ProRAW, 48MP capture or Night mode remain available past 8x.
- The maximum zoom in each video format, including Cinematic mode at 4K 60 fps and ProRes at 4K 120 fps.
- Whether the 40x ceiling applies to video as well as to stills.
