iPhone 18 Pro Loses 3 Hours When the Video Streams, and the Pro Max Loses 5

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback and up to 33 hours of streamed video, and the Pro Max for 45 and 40. Streaming costs the smaller phone 3 hours and the larger one 5, and Apple publishes both numbers without ever explaining the difference.

The streamed figure is the one most people are actually living in, and it is the number that shrinks the Pro Max advantage. On local playback the Pro Max leads by 9 hours. On streamed video it leads by 7.

Those percentages are ours, worked out from Apple’s own hours. Apple states the pairs and leaves the subtraction to the reader, which is why the streaming penalty rarely appears in coverage of the phone.

Why the larger phone gives up more

The Pro Max does not lose more time because it streams worse. It loses more hours because it has more hours to lose, and the penalty appears to scale with the rating rather than sit at a fixed number. Eleven percent of 45 hours is a longer evening than 8 percent of 36.

There is a more useful way to read it. The iPhone 18 Pro streamed figure of 33 hours is exactly the iPhone 17 Pro local playback figure, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max streamed figure of 40 hours is an hour above the iPhone 17 Pro Max local playback figure of 39. The iPhone Duo is the outlier, giving up 7 hours on its outer display and 5 on the inner one, which is about 16 percent either way. Every iPhone in the table loses something, so the penalty is a property of Apple’s test rather than of any single phone.

What Apple does not define about either test

Apple publishes no test conditions for any of these figures. There is no stated network type, no bit rate, no service, no brightness setting and no content length, for either the playback figure or the streamed one. The only qualifier Apple attaches anywhere is in the press release, which marks the video playback hours as the eSIM-only model’s.

That makes the gap between the two numbers the most honest thing about them. It is internally consistent, measured by the same company on the same phone, and it is the closest published guide to how much a phone gives up when the video comes over a network. What Apple has not said

  • The conditions behind either video figure, including network, resolution, bit rate or brightness.
  • Any rating for streaming at a named quality level, or for downloaded content played offline.
  • Battery capacity in milliamp hours for either model, which would let anyone check the arithmetic.
  • Whether the typical use figures of 24 and 30 hours include any streaming at all.
  • A streamed-video figure for video capture, gaming, navigation or calls, none of which Apple rates.
