Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 24 hours of typical use, up to 36 hours of video playback and up to 33 hours of streamed video, and the Pro Max at 30, 45 and 40 hours. Every one of those numbers measures the phone playing video back. None of them measures the phone shooting it.
That gap matters on a phone whose marquee feature is 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps. Apple publishes no minutes per charge at any recording format, no maximum clip length and no thermal limit, which means nobody can tell you how long this phone shoots until people start shooting with it on Friday, September 18.

Why playback figures do not help a shoot
Playing a file back reads from storage and drives the display. Recording runs three cameras’ worth of hardware, the image pipeline on the A20 Pro, encoding at up to 120 frames per second, and writing to storage, with the display on the whole time. The two workloads are not comparable, and Apple has never claimed they are.
The one recording-side number Apple does publish is the charging claim: up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W USB-C adapter that Apple sells separately and has not priced on its storefronts. For anyone planning to shoot away from power, that is the only published lever.
The cooling claim, and what it does not promise
Apple describes a next-generation vapor chamber attached directly to the A20 Pro, with roughly three times the surface area of the previous design and about three times the cooling performance. That is a thermal design claim, not a duration claim.
Apple has not said how long the phone sustains 4K120 capture, whether it reduces frame rate or resolution when it gets warm, or what happens at the end of a long take. The A20 Pro explainer collects the performance claims Apple did make, all of which are stated without test conditions.

Without a bit rate, the storage tiers cannot be converted into minutes, which is the single most useful sum a buyer choosing between 256GB and 2TB would want. The route around it is external recording for ProRes, which moves the heaviest files off the phone entirely and leaves the internal drive for everything else. Apple names no drive and no write speed for that either.
What Apple has not said
- Any battery rating for video capture, at any resolution or frame rate, on either model.
- Bit rates or file sizes per minute for Dolby Vision, ProRes or ProRes RAW.
- Whether recording continues while the phone charges, and at what rate.
- Battery capacity in milliamp hours, which Apple does not publish.
- What the phone does thermally at the end of a long take, or whether it changes frame rate or resolution.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14, and the phones arrive on Friday, September 18. The first honest recording-time figures will come from people with the phone in hand, not from Apple’s spec page. Choosing between the two sizes at pre-order means choosing on playback ratings, because they are all there is.
