The iPhone Duo’s rear camera system starts with a 48MP Fusion main camera at 26 mm and f/1.6, held steady by sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and Apple’s press release credits it with zero shutter lag. It is one of only two rear lenses on the phone, and it also produces the Duo’s 2x telephoto as a 12MP crop rather than through a third lens.
That makes the main camera the most consequential piece of hardware on the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable. On the iPhone 18 Pro the main camera is a 24 mm unit with a four-stop variable aperture. On the Duo it is a fixed f/1.6 lens at 26 mm, the same focal length and aperture Apple lists for iPhone 17 and iPhone Air.

What sensor-shift stabilization and zero shutter lag describe
Sensor-shift stabilization moves the sensor itself rather than the lens to counter hand movement. Apple lists it on the Duo’s main camera and does not list it on the ultra wide.

Zero shutter lag is Apple’s own phrasing for the delay between pressing the shutter and the frame being recorded. Apple applies the phrase to the Duo’s main camera and publishes no timing figure behind it, so there is no number to hold it to.
Neither claim has been checked outside Apple. Nobody has shot with an iPhone Duo yet, so both sit in the same category as the rest of the camera list: published, and untested.
One sensor, two focal lengths
Apple describes the main camera as having an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto. The camera app offers 0.5x, 1x and 2x as optical steps, a 4x optical zoom range end to end, and up to 10x digital zoom beyond that.
The 2x is a 12MP crop taken from the middle of the 48MP frame at 52 mm, and it keeps f/1.6 because it is the same piece of glass.
This is where the clearest hardware gap against the iPhone 18 Pro sits. The Duo has four cameras but only two rear lenses and no dedicated telephoto, while the Pro adds a 48MP 4x tetraprism at 100 mm plus an optical-quality 8x crop at 200 mm. The wider f/1.6 opening is fixed, so the Duo cannot stop down the way the Pro can. Apple’s variable aperture is a Pro-only feature this year, and the Duo’s spec sheet does not mention manual aperture or shutter speed controls at all.
What the main camera records
Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps, Cinematic mode up to 4K at 60 fps, Action mode up to 2.8K at 60 fps, slow motion at 1080p 240 fps and 4K 120 fps, QuickTake at 4K 60, plus time-lapse and Night mode time-lapse.
Two lines are specific to the folding design. Dual Capture records the rear and front cameras at once at 4K 30, and Apple lists Center Stage on the rear camera as well as the front.
There is also a Camera Control button with a Siri Camera mode, and Apple says Cinematic effects can be applied at 60 fps after capture. The Duo against the iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison covers how the two video feature sets diverge.
What Apple has not said
Apple publishes no sensor size, no pixel size and no minimum focus distance for the Duo’s main camera. ProRes, Apple Log and spatial video do not appear anywhere in the Duo camera specs it has published, all three of which the iPhone 18 Pro lists.
Apple has also not said whether the 2x crop runs the same processing pipeline as on other iPhones, and no image quality claim of any kind can be checked yet.
Nothing new has been published since the September 9 announcement. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phone ships Friday, October 23 running iOS 27.1.
