On the same September 9 page where Apple opened developer resources for iPhone Duo, it also posted a separate notice with its own deadline: starting in April 2027, any app uploaded to the App Store must be built with the iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 software development kit or later. iPhone Duo ships six months before that date arrives, and the two deadlines are not the same requirement.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16, and the device reaches customers Friday, October 23. What Apple announced alongside iPhone Duo’s developer page
The same September 9 developer post that opened App Store submissions for the new operating systems, titled “App Store submissions now open for the latest OS releases,” carries three other changes: new age-rating questions under Time Allowances for apps with social-media capabilities, new App Store asset requirements including product page headers and search result images, and a new product page preview tool inside App Store Connect. The April 2027 SDK requirement sits in the same post, stated once, with no separate mention of iPhone Duo.

What the April 2027 rule actually requires
The rule is about compiler versions, not fold support. An app built with the iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 SDK compiles against the current operating system’s frameworks; it does not, on its own, mean the app has adopted dynamic resizing or an adaptive layout for iPhone Duo’s two displays. Xcode 27 already reached release candidate status on September 9, so a developer who wants to satisfy the April 2027 requirement today can already do so, without writing a single line of code aimed at the fold.
What the rule does not require
Apple has not tied the April 2027 SDK deadline to iPhone Duo, to adaptive layouts, or to any fold-specific certification. What Apple has not said
Apple has not said whether the April 2027 SDK requirement will eventually carry a fold-specific condition attached to it, or remain a version number only. It has not published a deadline of any kind for adopting adaptive layouts on iPhone Duo, leaving that entirely as guidance. The two dates, October 23 and April 2027, describe two different kinds of readiness, and Apple has kept them separate in everything it has published so far.
