Apple’s first foldable pre-orders on Friday, October 16 and ships on Friday, October 23, exactly five weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reach buyers on September 18. For anyone weighing a first-generation fold, that gap is the most useful thing about the launch, because most of what sits inside an iPhone Duo goes on sale in the Pro Max first, and nothing is payable until October 16.
Apple published both calendars on September 9 and has not moved either since. The Duo also ships on iOS 27.1 rather than the iOS 27 that reaches every other supported iPhone on Monday, September 14, so the fold arrives on software no buyer will have run before launch day.

The Duo parts that go on sale five weeks early
The Duo is not a clean-sheet phone underneath. On Apple’s own tech specs, much of it is the hardware that ships on September 18, so those parts spend five weeks in public hands before a fold is sold.

That is the value of the wait. The A20 Pro in the fold is the chip Apple put in the Pro, the modem and wireless silicon are the same parts, and Apple says the Ultra Wide camera matches. Anyone who wants to know how that hardware behaves has five weeks of other people’s phones to learn from.
What nobody can test before October 23
The rest is genuinely new, and Apple has published specifications rather than results. Nobody outside Apple has used one, so each line below is Apple’s own claim.
- The hinge: Grade 5 titanium, a cover 3D-printed in recycled titanium, more than 100 components with custom adhesives for flex relief. No fold-cycle rating is published.
- The inner display: 7.6 inches at 1878 by 2670, under a custom polymer Apple says is 40 percent stiffer than the industry standard, with a nano-texture finish credited with minimising the crease. No crease measurement is published.
- The dual battery: up to 24 hours of typical use, 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 on the inner, with no capacity given for either cell.
- The under-display FaceTime camera at f/1.8, and the Touch ID side button that replaces Face ID.
- Split View, the reimagined StandBy and the posable layouts, which exist on no other iPhone.

The Duo is the only iPhone shipping on iOS 27.1
Apple’s press release says the Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not the iOS 27 that arrives on Monday, September 14. Apple has not dated iOS 27.1, published its release notes, or said whether other iPhones get it at the same time. Every fold-only feature above runs on it.
The developer timeline has the same shape. Apple’s developer page for the Duo lists the Xcode 27.1 beta as coming later this month, and that is the toolchain third-party apps need to adapt to two displays and a fold.
Waiting costs nothing before October 16
There is no reservation, deposit or email signup on Apple’s iPhone Duo page. The prices are published: $1,999 for 256GB rising to $3,199 for 2TB on Apple’s Store pages, or $83.29 a month for 24 months with Apple Card Monthly Installments, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $57.99 a month. Buyers also get three months of Apple One free.
Apple publishes no stock figures for any product, so nobody can say how a first-generation fold will behave in the queue. What Apple’s sales policies do state is that it may limit order quantities and that an order confirmation is not acceptance. What has not been confirmed
Apple has published no fold-cycle rating, no battery capacity, no memory figure, no repair price for the folding display, and no per-device AppleCare+ price for anything it launched in September. It has not dated iOS 27.1, has given no country list for the October 30 wave, and no carrier has published a Duo offer.
