iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max: 14 Spec Lines the $700 Gap Does Not Touch

An iPhone Duo costs $700 more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max at every one of the four storage tiers, and on 14 published specification lines the two phones are identical. Same chip, same radios, same modem, same port speed, same wireless charging ceiling, same water rating, same Ultra Wide camera, same storage ladder.

Comparisons usually run the other way, listing what the fold adds and what it gives up. Reading the sameness first is more useful, because it shows exactly how narrow the part of the phone is that the premium pays for.

One chip, one radio set, one port

The silicon is the clearest case. Both phones run the A20 Pro, Apple’s first 2-nanometer iPhone chip, with the same core counts and the same published GPU and memory bandwidth claims against last year’s A19 Pro. The one difference is in the wording rather than the hardware: Apple publishes a 20 percent CPU figure on the Duo pages and no CPU percentage at all for the iPhone 18 Pro.

Connectivity is a straight match too, down to the N1 wireless chip, the C2 modem with mmWave in the US and USB 3 at 10 Gb/s over USB-C. The Duo’s page adds DisplayPort to that port line, and it drops the SIM tray in every market rather than in 12 of them.

The glass, the water rating and the box

A hinged phone carrying the same IP68 rating as a sealed one, to 6 meters for 30 minutes, is the most surprising row in the table. The cover glass pairing is also shared: Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, with the Duo’s inner display protected instead by a custom polymer over high-strength glass layers.

Both boxes hold the phone and a 1 m USB-C cable, with no power adapter, and both batteries use 100 percent recycled cobalt inside 100 percent fiber-based packaging. Recycled content overall is one line that does differ: 40 percent on the iPhone 18 Pro against 35 percent on the Duo.

Where the $700 does land

Eight published lines separate them, and they are the ones worth arguing over. Our full iPhone Duo against iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison runs through each.

What Apple has not said

Apple publishes no direct comparison between these two phones, no memory figure for either, and no battery capacities. The Duo’s published video list does not mention ProRes, Apple Log 2 or Genlock, and Apple has not said whether it supports them. AppleCare+ is unpriced for both, and the battery ratings on both are Apple’s laboratory figures. Nobody outside Apple has used an iPhone Duo, so the 14 shared lines are the safest ground a buyer has today.
