Three of the features Apple named for the iPhone Duo exist to put something on a screen the person holding the phone cannot see. Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime all run on the 5.4-inch outer display, facing whoever is in front of the camera.
That is a job no iPhone screen has had before, because on every other iPhone the display and the main cameras point in opposite directions. Nobody outside Apple has used any of it, so this is a record of what Apple documents about the outward-facing screen and the features that depend on it.

Duo Preview and Kid Cue put the viewfinder on the outside
Duo Preview is the simpler of the two. Apple describes it as a live preview of the shot shown on the outer display, so the subject sees the framing at the same time the photographer does on the inner one.

Kid Cue uses the same screen for the opposite purpose. Rather than showing the subject the picture, Apple says it plays animations designed to hold a child’s attention, which is a use of a phone display that has no equivalent anywhere else in the lineup.
Duo FaceTime turns the outside into a shared screen
Duo FaceTime is the one feature in this group that is not about photography. Apple’s description is that nearby friends join a call from the outer display, which means one phone carries two participants looking at two different screens.
Apple has not said how many people can join this way, how the second participant is added, or which camera captures them. The Duo has an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen rated at 1080p from 30 to 60 fps and a 12MP Center Stage camera at f/2.2 on the outer one.
The display doing the work
None of this would work on a token secondary panel, and Apple’s numbers make the point that the outer screen is not one. It is the same class of display as the inner one, with the same aspect ratio and the same brightness ratings.

The 44-hour figure matters here, because every one of these features is used with the phone closed. Apple rates the outer display for 13 more hours of video playback than the inner one, and for streamed video the split is 37 hours against 26.
The shutter decision behind all three
Smart Take is the fourth feature in Apple’s Duo-only camera list, and it is the one that runs on the photographer’s side. Apple says on-device intelligence works out when everyone is posed and takes the picture, which pairs with a subject who can see the framing on the outer screen.
Apple lists Center Stage for the rear camera as well, alongside Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5, Night mode and Portrait Lighting with six effects. The Duo camera system has no telephoto lens, so the 2x optical-quality crop of the Main is the longest reach available to any of these features, well short of the iPhone 18 Pro camera system and its 8x optical-quality crop.

- Whether Duo Preview works with the Ultra Wide and the 2x crop or only the Main camera
- What Kid Cue actually shows, how many animations there are, or whether they can be chosen
- How many people can join a Duo FaceTime call from the outer display, and which camera records them
- Whether the subject can see anything else on the outer display during a shot
- Whether third-party camera and video apps can use the outer display the same way
