Apple never compares the Duo with an iPad, in any document, and the phone ships on iOS 27.1 rather than iPadOS 27.
That absence is the story for anyone weighing $1,999 against a cheaper iPhone plus a second screen. The hardware numbers are all published. The question of whether one device does both jobs is one Apple has left entirely alone.

The tablet-shaped features Apple does list
Apple’s iPhone Duo product pages name several capabilities that no other iPhone has, and they are the ones that point at a second device rather than at a phone.

- Split View, which puts two apps side by side on the inner display.
- An upgraded StandBy, a redesigned Dynamic Island and a Call Context widget, with layouts that respond to how the phone is posed, including seated and standing positions.
- Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both displays, with support arriving later in 2026 rather than on day one.
- USB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s, and DisplayPort output listed on the Duo’s specification page.
- One cellular identity rather than two, since the Duo is eSIM-only worldwide with dual eSIM and two active lines, so there is no second data plan to pay for.
It runs iOS, and Apple says so plainly
Apple lists iOS 27.1 for the Duo. iOS 27 itself arrives free on Monday, September 14, the same day as iPadOS 27, and the two remain separate releases. Apple has published nothing about iPad apps running on the Duo, nothing about the iPad’s multitasking behavior appearing on it, and no list of which apps support Split View.
The reading that follows from Apple’s own material is narrow. The Duo is an iPhone with a second, larger display and a handful of layout features built for it, described in iPhone terms throughout.

What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published a fold-cycle rating, a crease measurement, an Apple Pencil release date beyond later in 2026, or any accessory that pairs the Duo with a keyboard. It has not priced AppleCare+ for the Duo. The $700 that separates it from an iPhone 18 Pro Max at every storage tier is the whole of the budget a second device would have to fit inside, and Apple offers no guidance on that trade. Nobody outside Apple has used an iPhone Duo, so no assessment of it as a tablet replacement exists yet.
