LG’s Home Collection cameras: the wiring each one needs before you buy

LG Floodlight Cam for Apple Home Collection in Essence Silver and Essence Graphite

Apple’s four new LG cameras for Apple Home Collection range from $199.95 to $399.95 (U.S.), and according to Apple’s store listings they ask very different things of your home’s electrics. Apple says availability begins in December, which leaves time to check whether you have the right wiring before you order.

We covered the lineup and its storage plans in our Home Collection cameras story. This piece sticks to one question: what does each camera need to get power?

LG Video Doorbell Wired: you need a doorbell already

The doorbell is the easiest swap if your home already has a wired doorbell. Apple’s listing says it runs on existing 16V to 24V doorbell wiring, “so there’s no battery to charge or replace,” and the footnote is blunt: it “Requires existing doorbell wiring for power supply.”

That means a home with a battery-only or wireless doorbell has no power source for it. If you have a wired button by the front door, check that your existing doorbell system falls within that voltage range before ordering.

The box is built for a swap. Apple lists a mounting plate, three mounting screws, three anchors, three extension wire screws, two extension wires, two jumper wires, two wire nuts, two fixing screws, a screw wrench, and a manual. The doorbell is rated IP65 for protection against dust and rain, and the camera head can be angled during installation “without additional accessories.”

LG Floodlight Cam: plan for an electrician

The Floodlight Cam is the one to think hardest about. Apple’s store page says it “Requires connection to high-voltage household electrical wiring. Installation by a licensed electrician recommended.”

In practice, that means a hardwired electrical connection where you want the camera, or someone qualified to provide one. LG has tried to make the job easier: “Push-in connectors built into the mounting plate allow wiring to be completed before the camera is mounted.” The box includes a mounting plate cover, a power assembly, two mounting screws, two locking screws, a screw wrench, and a manual.

That power feeds a lot of hardware. The 1780-lumen floodlight turns on automatically when people, vehicles, or animals are detected, with adjustable brightness, and there is a siren you can trigger from the Home app. At 2 lb. 6.8 oz., it is also the heaviest camera in the lineup, so the mounting surface matters. Like the doorbell, it carries an IP65 rating.

LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In: find an outlet first

The Outdoor Cam avoids hardwiring. Apple’s listing says “A plug-in design helps simplify installation, making it easier to place the camera where it’s needed most,” and Apple’s press release describes it as offering “simple self-installation.”

The practical limit is placement near outdoor power. Apple’s in-box list (a mounting plate cover, two mounting screws, two anchors, two locking screws, a screw wrench, and a manual) does not mention a power cable or adapter, so confirm with LG what plugs in where before you choose a spot. It is rated IP65 and weighs 2 lb. 1.5 oz.

LG Indoor Cam Plug-In: USB-C and three mounting options

The Indoor Cam is the simplest. Its power source is USB-C, a USB-C cable is in the box, and Apple says it supports “tabletop, wall, and ceiling installation.” Two screws and two anchors are included for mounting.

Its tilt mechanism works from the Home app or a button on top of the support column, which is worth keeping in mind if you mount it high and still want to tilt it by hand.

Before you buy: a short checklist

  • Doorbell: confirm you have a wired doorbell on 16V to 24V. No wiring, no power.
  • Floodlight: confirm there is a high-voltage household connection where you want it, and budget for an electrician.
  • Outdoor Cam: pick a spot near outdoor power and check with LG what the power connection looks like.
  • Indoor Cam: any spot within reach of USB-C power works, including walls and ceilings.
  • All cameras: setup uses NFC pairing, which requires an iPhone running the latest operating system software.

ADT installation through Apple

If you would rather not do it yourself, Apple says Apple Retail now offers third-party installation from ADT “for an additional charge, available in the U.S. starting this fall.” The Floodlight Cam listing points buyers to installation.adt.com, noting the service is available “In select areas.”

ADT’s booking page walks through buying your products, checking that technicians serve your address, answering questions about your setup for a price, and paying a deposit that is “fully refundable up to 24 hours before your appointment,” with the balance due when the job is done.

Apple announced the cameras alongside the rest of the lineup in its Apple Home Collection press release.
