M5 Ultra: How Apple Fuses Two Dies Into ‘Its Most Powerful Chip Ever’


M5 Ultra is the chip Apple calls, in its own words, “Apple’s most powerful chip ever.” Announced August 25, 2026, it ships only in Mac Studio, where it starts at $5,499. What sets M5 Ultra apart from every other chip in Apple’s current lineup is not just its size, but how Apple builds it: by fusing two dies together.

Apple does not use the word “fused” loosely here. The company publishes a specific number meant to prove the two dies function as one: over 4.4TB/s of bandwidth moving between them.

The number that proves it is two dies, not one

M5 Ultra’s core counts are exactly double a single large die’s: up to 36 CPU cores against M5 Max’s 18, up to 80 GPU cores against M5 Max’s 40, and a 32-core Neural Engine against M5 Max’s 16. That doubling is the visible sign of Apple’s approach: M5 Ultra is built from two dies joined together rather than designed as one larger piece of silicon from scratch.

The 4.4TB/s inter-die bandwidth figure is what makes that joint work at chip speed rather than at the speed of two separate computers talking to each other. Apple presents this bandwidth figure specifically as the evidence that the two dies behave as a single chip to software, not as two chips sharing a case.

Unified memory up to 512GB

Because the two dies are fused, their memory pools combine too. M5 Ultra’s unified memory ceiling reaches 512GB, moving at 1.2TB/s, the highest of any chip in Apple’s current Mac lineup. That figure is also why the top Mac Studio configuration is not available at general sale on September 22: Apple has said the 512GB build ships separately, in late October 2026.

What the fused design is for

Apple ties M5 Ultra’s architecture directly to on-device AI workloads. Its Media Engine, for instance, carries twice the video encode and decode blocks of M5 Max, and Apple says a cluster of four Mac Studio systems delivers 3 times faster AI inference than a single system, a clustering feature Apple is now selling as a distinct capability rather than a theoretical one. Apple’s chief hardware officer, Johny Srouji, said the new Mac Studio lineup, built around M5 Max and M5 Ultra, “ushers in a new era of desktop computing, delivering huge performance gains for pro workloads and AI inference with frontier-class models.”

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published the exact fabrication process for M5 Ultra separate from M5 Max, nor a technical name for the interconnect that joins the two dies. Apple also has not said whether a future M6 Ultra is planned, or whether the fusing technique will carry forward to the 2-nanometer M6 generation. For now, M5 Ultra remains the only Ultra-class chip Apple sells, and Mac Studio remains the only Mac that carries it. Apple has likewise not published a per-die core count or confirmed whether each half of M5 Ultra is, on its own, identical to a standalone M5 Max.

Mac Studio with M5 Ultra reaches general sale Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at $5,499, with the 512GB memory configuration following in late October. That date sits just ten days after the September 9 keynote that introduced iPhone 18 Pro and its own A20 Pro chip, and Mac Studio will run macOS 27 once it arrives.
