Memory Integrity Enforcement Is Still Apple’s Only Named Chip-Level Security Feature

Apple’s most detailed public security research post of the past year describes Memory Integrity Enforcement, a chip-and-software defense built into the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. No later Apple chip has received an equivalent named write-up on Apple’s own security research site since.

What the feature combines, in Apple’s own terms

Apple describes Memory Integrity Enforcement as always-on rather than a setting a person switches on, running underneath the operating system on the paired chip. The company’s post credits “an extraordinary amount of Apple silicon resources” dedicated specifically so the A19 and A19 Pro chips could support it, and pairs that hardware work with software policies it calls Tag Confidentiality Enforcement. Apple’s page stops at that description; it does not publish exploit examples or a technical walkthrough of an attack the feature has stopped.

Apple’s post breaks the feature into three named layers: its existing secure memory allocators, Arm’s Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension running in synchronous mode, and Tag Confidentiality Enforcement policies that Apple says it designed itself. Apple calls the combination five years in development, describing it as spanning hardware and software work rather than a single software patch. The company also says developers can test against the protection directly, using an Enhanced Security setting inside Xcode, rather than waiting to discover a conflict after shipping an app.

What iOS 27 does and does not change here

Apple’s own iOS 27 feature pages list a redesigned Screen Time, Siri AI in beta, and Passwords app changes, among others. None of Apple’s iOS 27 materials name Memory Integrity Enforcement. The feature’s own page still describes itself only in terms of iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, both chips introduced under iOS 26, which means installing iOS 27 on an eligible device changes nothing about whether that device has the protection: it is a property of the chip, not of the software version running on top of it.

Why that distinction matters for a buyer

Because Apple ties the feature to silicon rather than software, an iOS update alone does not add it to a device that shipped without the paired chip. Apple’s own iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo pages, both from the September 9 event, describe their own chip by name without repeating the Memory Integrity Enforcement post or extending its claims to the newer silicon.

That leaves a reader with no Apple-published answer to a fairly obvious question: whether any chip announced after the A19 and A19 Pro carries the same protection. Apple’s silence on the point cuts both ways. It could mean the feature simply is not something Apple repeats by name every year, the way it does not republish a fresh Lockdown Mode post annually either, or it could mean the company has nothing new to say yet. Either way, the only Apple-sourced answer available this weekend is the original post, dated to the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air launch under iOS 26.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not said whether Memory Integrity Enforcement extends to any chip beyond the A19 and A19 Pro, has not published data on how many attempted exploits it has stopped in practice, and has not connected it by name to any CVE fixed in the releases covered on Apple’s security index. The company’s September 9 event did not revisit the feature either.

As of Sunday, September 13, 2026, the Memory Integrity Enforcement post remains Apple’s most recent named chip-level security feature, one day before iOS 27 arrives on the devices that already have it and the devices that do not.
