Apple’s long-delayed set-top box update is finally expected this fall. Mark Gurman says the next Apple TV will add Siri AI support and a faster chip after the company held the hardware back until its redesigned assistant was ready.
The wait has become more noticeable because the current Apple TV 4K is four years old. Gurman describes it as sluggish and behind newer rivals in audio and smart-home technology, while a memory-chip shortage has pushed the starting price from $129 to $199.
Siri AI was the missing piece
Gurman says Apple had tried to introduce a refreshed box since 2024, but wanted it to “leverage the new Siri assistant.” The Siri overhaul was delayed as well, so Apple reportedly shelved the hardware until the AI features reached a usable point.

Apple officially introduced Siri AI at WWDC 2026, creating the software foundation for a more capable living-room assistant. A faster chip could support quicker navigation, improved gaming and more local processing, although Gurman does not name the processor in this report.

Apple’s current technical specifications remain the only confirmed hardware details. The company has not announced a launch date, final chip, storage options or price for a replacement, so the fall timing should still be treated as a report.
The report does not say whether Siri AI will require every household member to enroll separately, how much processing will happen on the box or whether older Apple TV models receive any related features. Those questions will determine whether the upgrade is essential hardware or mainly a faster path to software Apple can support elsewhere.
Apple could also pair the hardware with Thread improvements or a revised Siri Remote, although this newsletter confirms neither feature.
