Apple is planning to upgrade its future earbuds by adding tiny built-in cameras. Recent code discoveries reveal that upcoming AirPods with cameras will significantly improve spatial audio head tracking. Instead of just relying on standard motion sensors, these new earbuds will physically see where you are looking. This hardware update aims to make directional sound much more accurate when you watch movies or listen to music.
How built-in lenses detect your screen to direct sound
The details behind this feature were uncovered in the latest macOS Tahoe 26.7 software code. According to MacRumors, the earbuds will use their cameras to locate the physical screen you are watching. The system then compares the screen position with the direction estimated by the internal motion sensors. This setup allows the earbuds to know which specific display has your attention.
These tiny cameras can identify a wide range of devices, including laptops, televisions, tablets, and a connected iPhone. If you have multiple monitors or devices in front of you, the earbuds will isolate and narrow the audio to the single screen you are actively looking at. This detection happens quietly in the background and automatically pauses if you start walking or moving around.

Currently, some devices use their Face ID sensors to help track head movements. Once the new earbuds launch, the system will prioritize the camera data from the earbuds over Face ID input. The software code also points to server-based visual reasoning, meaning the earbuds will send camera data to company servers to process visual intelligence requests.
While the code is already present in recent software updates, buyers will have to wait a bit longer to try this out. Current rumors indicate the company will not officially release these camera-equipped earbuds until the fall of 2027. Until then, users will continue to rely on the standard motion sensors for directional audio.
