OpenAI Urges Mac Users to Update ChatGPT and Codex Apps Immediately

ChatGPT hits 900 million weekly users, closing in on 1 billion

If you use artificial intelligence tools on an Apple computer, you need to check for updates today. OpenAI recently issued a security warning asking all Mac users to download the newest versions of its ChatGPT and Codex applications right away. The company discovered a potential security flaw in a third-party tool used to build its software.

While there is no evidence that hackers actually exploited the weakness, updating your software ensures your personal data and computer remain completely secure from any future threats.

A compromised third-party tool forced the sudden software update

The security issue did not actually start inside the artificial intelligence company itself. Instead, it traces back to a popular developer tool called Axios that programmers use to build modern applications (via 9to5Mac). Someone compromised a specific version of this tool that developers ultimately included in the Mac software. This created a hidden vulnerability inside the code that could theoretically allow someone to send unauthorized network requests.

OpenAI quickly noticed the problem during a routine scan and replaced the compromised files before things got worse. The company stated it has not seen any signs of bad actors actually accessing user accounts or stealing sensitive information. It just wants to play it safe by pushing out fresh, secure versions of the affected software to everyone.

You must download the newest application versions to stay safe

Getting the fix is very easy for anyone running the software. If you use the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex programming tool on an Apple computer, simply open the application. A prompt should appear on your screen asking you to install the latest version right then and there.

Taking a few minutes to install these patches helps protect your private conversations and programming work from unwanted visitors. If you do not see a prompt automatically, you can check for updates manually. You just need to click the application name in the menu bar at the top of your screen and select the update option.

You should install the patch as soon as possible. Delaying software updates leaves your system open to unnecessary risks, even when a company catches the initial problem early.
