Replacing the Battery on Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro Is Now Easier

Apple has changed how you replace the battery on the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro. You no longer need to remove several internal parts. You now replace only the battery. Apple also sells the battery directly through its Self Service Repair Store and provides an updated repair guide to walk you through the process.

Battery replacement is now a single-part repair

Until now, replacing the battery on the M5 MacBook Pro required extra work. You had to remove multiple internal modules just to reach the battery. That made the repair slow and risky, even for experienced users.

Apple has simplified this process. You now remove the bottom case and disconnect the battery management unit flex cable. After that, you can access and replace the battery directly. The rest of the internal components stay in place. This change reduces time, effort, and the chance of accidental damage.

iFixit highlighted the original problem

iFixit pointed out this issue in its teardown of the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro last October. The teardown described battery replacement as one of the most difficult parts of repairing the device. The need to swap out several modules stood out as a major drawback for repairability.

Apple’s new process directly addresses that criticism.

Apple sells the battery and tools directly

Apple now sells the battery as a standalone module through its Self Service Repair Store. You can also buy the required tools there.

  • The replacement battery costs $209.25
  • Apple offers a $22.50 credit when you return the old battery
  • Tools are sold separately

Apple also published a new repair manual. It includes clear, step-by-step instructions for removing the rear case, safely discharging the battery, removing adhesive strips, and installing the new battery.

Still not a quick job for most users

Even with these improvements, the repair takes time. The process includes 14 disassembly steps and 27 reassembly steps. Many users will still prefer professional service.

Apple describes its self-service repair program as “intended for individuals who are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices.” The update makes battery replacement easier, but it does not make it casual.
