Older Apple TV 4K models get Siri AI in tvOS 27.2 beta: what you need

You do not need Apple’s new $299 Apple TV 4K to try Siri AI. Apple said on October 13 that Siri AI is available as a beta in tvOS 27.2 on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), in English, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK.

That brings the headline feature of the launch to existing boxes, with a few conditions spelled out in Apple’s footnotes. The new 4th generation model, which arrives in stores Friday, November 13, adds hands-free listening and a faster chip on top.

Which Apple TV models qualify

Apple’s press release announcing the new Apple TV 4K names Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) for Siri AI. In practice, that covers three models:

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), the A15 Bionic model the new box replaces
  • Apple TV 4K (4th generation), the new A19 model

By that wording, Apple TV HD and the first Apple TV 4K are left out. Siri AI on these boxes is labelled a beta, and Apple’s release does not give a date for tvOS 27.2.

What you need

Siri AI on Apple TV leans on the iPhone or iPad of whoever owns the home in the Home app. Here is the checklist from Apple’s footnotes:

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) running tvOS 27.2
  • The home owner, as set in the Home app, has an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software
  • Siri AI turned on on that iPhone or iPad and set to a supported language
  • English, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, or the UK at launch
  • For personal context requests, a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled device with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language

The EU is not on the launch list, and Apple adds that Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU in iOS or iPadOS. Since the Apple TV version depends on the home owner’s iPhone or iPad, EU households will have to wait.

There is also a usage cap to know about. Apple says certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, and that expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future.

What Siri AI does on your TV

Apple describes Siri AI as an entirely new version of Siri powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence, with personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, and the ability to take even more systemwide app actions. On Apple TV 4K it runs as a full-screen experience.

Apple’s examples are all about finding and understanding what to watch:

  • Ask “What Apple TV shows won at the Emmy Awards this year?” and see poster art pulled from the Apple TV app, with suggestions like “More award-winning comedies” to keep exploring.
  • While watching, ask follow-up questions such as “Where was Pluribus filmed?” or “Is this appropriate for a 15-year-old?” Answers appear in a compact overlay so playback stays on screen.
  • With an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, Siri AI can use your personal context to handle requests like “Play the show Alinda recommended.”

Apple also says users can use Siri AI to control smart home accessories and turn scenes on or off, though it describes that hands-free in the context of the new model’s home hub features.

What the 4th generation adds

The biggest practical difference is how you talk to Siri. On the 3rd generation model, Apple’s spec page lists the microphone for Siri on the Siri Remote, so you press and speak. The new Apple TV 4K has three far-field microphones built into the box, which Apple says let users control what they are watching and discover shows completely hands-free. Advanced echo cancellation isolates your voice for “Hey Siri” or “Siri” recognition, even while audio is playing.

Far-field support has its own language list. Apple says it varies by region and language and is supported when the primary tvOS language is set to Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Norwegian, or Swedish.

The A19 delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation, according to Apple, and adds a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient streaming. The new model is also the only one that supports Apple’s four-speaker surround setup, which requires four HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2 speakers in matching front and rear pairs.

The new Siri Remote works with older boxes

Apple says the new Siri Remote is compatible with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K and is available to buy separately. Find My support works on the Siri Remote (2nd generation or later), while playing a sound to locate the remote is exclusive to the newest Siri Remote. Precision Finding needs the Siri Remote (4th generation) paired with iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e.

Should you upgrade

If your main interest is the new Siri, a 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV 4K plus an eligible iPhone gets you the full-screen Siri AI beta without new hardware. The Apple TV 4K (4th generation) makes more sense if you want to talk to your TV without reaching for the remote, plan a four-speaker HomePod setup, or want the A19’s speed and AV1 support. It costs $299 (U.S.) or $49.83 (U.S.) per month for six months, with pre-orders open since October 13 and availability in stores beginning Friday, November 13.
